This article first describes the content and conduct of piano teaching at Unitra's Department of Music Education from 1995 to date. Second, it examines the major challenges both piano lecturers and students currently face in the department. Finally, it predicts the future of piano teaching in the new Walter Sisulu University which starts in January 2005 when Unitra merges with two technikons, namely Border Technikon, East London and Eastern Cape Technikon, Butterworth, neither of which has a music department.
