One of the legacies of apartheid is a crisis in South African education. The existing formal structures of education cannot cope with the scale nor the nature of the educational needs of the vast majority of South Africa's population. This article explores the potential role that sports programmes can play in non-formal educational provision. Within an action research format, the research project utilized the apprenticeship model of social organization for the general development of 10-year...

Clinical signs and parasitaemia were followed daily for the first week and on days 14 and 28. WHO Mark II schizont inhibition tests were performed for all the above 3 drugs and chloroquine. The total number of cases was 73. The mean...

Since 1964 there have been six earthquakes of M w ≥ 5.5 in east Africa whose centroid depths have been demonstrated to be in the range of 25–40 km. These depths are significantly greater than the 5‐ to 15‐km range typical of most other regions of continental extension. The March 10, 1989 earthquake ( M w 6.1) in Malaŵi is the first such deep event to have occurred within the main topographic expression of the late Cenozoic east African rift system. Its focal mechanism and depth (32 ± 5 km)...

Disability among the aged is an issue of growing importance to southern Africa as it is throughout the world. New methods and debates about disability and ageing are illustrated by a discussion of the Australian situation. First, trends in mortality and life expectancy are outlined, and the debate about the compression of mortality critically examined. Second, the same techniques of analysis are applied to disability and handicap rates derived from national surveys. The hypothesis of...

Recent reform initiatives have placed the responsibility for effectively educating students with special learning needs in general education. A driving belief of the "general education initiative" is that more students can be effectively served in general classrooms than is currently the case. Two areas (i.e., school climate and parental involvement) that must be discussed if such reform efforts are to make a real difference are presented in this article. Practical suggestions are provided...

A group of Zambian primary school children with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities was studied together with nondisabled peers. Observations were carried out in two situations: an “experimental” situation where manipulations were made to investigate subsequent increases in social interaction, and a “natural” situation without any manipulations. Several interventions were tested at intervals separated by baselines. Although play-skills training of children with disabilities resulted...

I looked on with bemusement as an attractive female passed a note to a young man in the first row. Some trite vulgarities were exchanged, my more restive classmates started singing, and the teacher was all but completely ignored. Welcome to the civics course at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, a lower-middle to middle-class suburb of Washington, D.C. Though the above scene is a commonplace to American students, as a recent immigrant raised in a poor but industrious village...
