The Bana transitional tholeiitic basalts occurring in a Tertiary volcano–plutonic complex of the Cameroon Line, Central Africa are plagioclase-bearing and olivine-free. K/Ar dating on separated plagioclases of the transitional tholeiitic basalts yields an Oligocene age of 30.1 ± 1.2 Ma. Their clinopyroxene compositions are marked by iron enrichment and calcium depletion in the Wo–En–Fs system. The whole-rock major element compositions are characterized by Mg# ∼ 36–48, normative quartz and...

Abstract This paper, originally given as an address to an African audience of students and academics, examines the functions of education in Africa and argues that the western-oriented approach at tertiary level is injurious to the intellectual development of students. It sets out an analysis of the processes at work in the University of Ghana which alienate students from their own cultural and socio-economic experiences. Using the example of social work education since its inception in 1958...

This article examines experiences in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces with devolved school governance, introduced in 1996 to promote democratic participation in education decision making. Utilizing the “theory of action” framework, this analysis is an effort to de-center the school governance debate by moving from a central government perspective to one privileging local meaning of participation and decision making in school governance. An understanding of individual local theories of...

This paper aims to present a complete picture on the trace metals distribution in the recent mollusk an shells from Lake Qarun sediments. The mollusk an shells were collected during August 2003 and analyzed for the trace metals viz: As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn. Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, V and Zn. Their relative order abundance in bivalve shells was: Fe> Cu> Sr> Zn> Mn> Pb> Ni> Se> As> Ba> Cr> Mo> Co>V >Cd, while in gastropod shells was: : Fe> Zn> Mn> Sr> Cu > As > Pb> Se> Ba> Ni>Cr> Mo> Go> V>...

Scoria cone modelling focuses on ballistic (no-drag) ejection that are termed Strombolian as a result of weak-intensity, strongly intermittent activity associated with bursting of gas bubbles resulting ballistic emplacement of clasts 10+ cm. Particles with a size < 10 cm are normally unable to follow ballistic trajectories instead depositing from sub-Plinian eruption clouds. The Neogene volcanic field near Volcán Ceboruco in the San Pedro–Ceboruco graben, Mexico includes fissure fed flows,...

Oligocene (28–27 Ma) leaf fragments displaying morphological affinities with the fern Acrostichum are described from volcanic and fluvio‐lacustrine strata near Chilga, west‐southwest of Gondar on the northwestern Ethiopian Plateau. The fossils consist of elongate pinnae impressions and compressions, with secondary veins that arise from a midvein, anastomose, and create a characteristic reticulate venation without included free veinlets. Modern Acrostichum has a pantropical distribution...

Since the vast number of scholars will be the taxpayers of the future, implementing tax education at school level should greatly enhance the success of the tax system. This will ensure that the majority of South Africans will have the opportunity to receive a basic understanding of tax and be more aware of what may be expected of them in the future. This paper investigates the existing level and adequacy of tax education in South African schools. A number of shortcomings within the current...

Abstract Ghana has seen several recent attempts to devolve control over the curriculum to the local level. The present study focuses on a single reform, the Local Content Curriculum (LCC). Analysis of local responses to this reform provides insights into the state’s influence on the actions and attitudes of Ghanaian teachers not previously detailed in research on educational decentralisation. These insights into the implementation of the LCC expand the understanding of the tangible effects...

This study provides an initial examination of the potential of open distance and flexible learning (ODFL) to mitigate the affects of HIV and AIDS on young people through an examination of experiences from Mozambique and South Africa. It analyses national AIDS policy and identifies major ODFL initiatives to translate this policy into practice. It explores the learning needs and favorite ways of learning of young people affected by HIV and AIDS and suggests ways for ODFL to support and extend...

Diabetes self-management education interventions in community gathering places have been moderately effective, but very few studies of intervention effectiveness have been conducted among African Americans with type 2 diabetes. This paper describes a church-based diabetes self-management education intervention for African Americans, a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the intervention, and baseline characteristics of study participants.A New DAWN: Diabetes Awareness & Wellness Network...

Urinary schistosomiasis remains a significant burden for Africa and the Middle East. Success of regional control strategies will depend, in part, on what influence local environmental and behavioral factors have on individual risk for primary infection and/or reinfection. Based on experience in a multi-year (1984-1992), school-based Schistosoma haematobium control program in Coast Province, Kenya, we examined risk for infection outcomes as a function of age, sex, pretreatment morbidity,...
