Such a comprehensive approach has the potential of supporting teachers with diverse levels of expertise and experience in teaching. By tailoring the programme to the school level, it can help to offer support that is contextually relevant and meaningfully addressing the needs of the teachers.

Mutilation and theft in libraries is a menace that has persisted, and the worsening state of libraries in Nigeria appears to have aggravated its intensity and the consequent detrimental impact. Using a structured questionnaire administered to undergraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria and a stratified focus group discussion (FGD), information was elicited on their perception of the methods of theft, attitudes to and perceived implications of theft on academic performance...

This study assesses the impact of training sheet metal workers in Kenya on their uptake of learned skills and their income. Fifty-eight artisans trained in the construction of metal silos for hermetic grain storage were compared to a random sample of 123 untrained artisans. Results show that two-thirds of the trained artisans were making the silos, half of these in their own workshops and half as employees. The probability of using the skills learned declined with age but increased with...

Because there is a high incidence of work-related disabilities in the African American community, which is due to several factors, African Americans are likely to be recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. In this article, the author reviews SSDI policies and examines cultural variables specific to African Americans that may negate return-to-work incentives. Social cognitive theory is offered as a framework for understanding behavioral responses of African...

This paper focused on three dominant psychological theories--Cognitive Dissonance, Relative Deprivation and Campus Ecology that have been evolved to explain student unrest, to determine their ability to account for the phenomenon in Nigerian universities. It found that none of the theories could all alone holistically account for all the causal factors (non-participation in decision-making, academic stress, welfare problems, changing value systems of students, parental influence, teacher...

Since independence in 1963, Kenya has invested substantial resources in the education sector. For almost twenty-five years, these investments and other government policies led to impressive gains in educational access at all levels. However, since the mid- to late 1980s there appears to have been an erosion in educational participation and a reversal of the gains achieved in previous decades. Motivated by this trend, this paper uses temporal, cross-section and pseudo-panel data to assess the...

The application of plant biotechnology can help facilitate sustainable food security in Africa. Appropriately trained scientists are needed to apply these techniques. The Biotechnology Education and Training Centre (BETCEN) for Africa was established at ARC-Roodeplaat by UNESCO during 1995. Since then 237 scientists from 27 countries have been trained. Training has primarily been in the fields of plant tissue culture and molecular markers. The courses consist of both the theory of the techniques and practical sessions.

We examine the impact of orphanhood on children's school enrollment in10 Sub-Saharan African countries. Although poorer children in Africa are less likely to attend school, the lower enrollment of orphans is not accounted for solely by their poverty. We find orphans are less likely to be enrolled than are non-orphans with whom they live. Consistent with Hamilton's Rule, the theory that the closeness of biological ties governs altruistic behavior, outcomes for orphans depend on the...

With the increasing minority population in the United States, much attention has been given to the lack of diversity among health care professionals, specifically nursing. Since the 1960s, the federal government has provided financial resources to institutions of higher education whose purpose was to diversify the health care profession. Historically, these resources have supported initiatives that primarily focused on the recruitment of minority students into higher education. These efforts...

The global spread of the HIV and AIDS pandemics will, for the next three generations at least, underline education access, quality and provision. Reforms within the sector will necessarily take account of the implications of this plague within national, provincial and local contexts. This article is based on several assumptions. The first is that HIV/AIDS is not only a medical problem: the spread of the disease has created a pandemic with social, economic, geopolitical and other consequences...
