Xenoliths hosted by Quaternary basanites and alkali basalts from Marsabit (northern Kenya) represent fragments of Proterozoic lithospheric mantle thinned and chemically modified during rifting in the Mesozoic (Anza Graben) and in the Tertiary–Quaternary (Kenya rift). Four types of peridotite xenoliths were investigated to constrain the thermal and chemical evolution of the lithospheric mantle. Group I, III and IV peridotites provide evidence of a cold, highly deformed and heterogeneous upper...

Summary Cerebral malaria results in short‐ to long‐term cognitive impairments in many of its child survivors. Although some of the risk factors for impairments have been identified, no attempts have been made to address the plight of those who develop cognitive impairments. This paper discusses the burden of cognitive impairment caused by cerebral malaria and suggests some rehabilitation strategies based on brain injury and cognitive rehabilitation studies. Potential cognitive rehabilitation...

Although the search for appropriate methodology in educating and training rural community populations is on going, previous efforts have yielded few results, some of which have not been successful with consequences for scarce resources. This paper, based on field reports from the Population Communication Project in Ghana, demonstrates that community learning theory can offer understanding of appropriate methodology in rural learning, education and training. The report shows steps used in...

Rhyolite pumices and co-erupted granophyric (granite) xenoliths yield evidence for rapid magma generation and crystallization prior to their eruption at 15·2 ± 2·9 ka at the Alid volcanic center in the Danikil Depression, Eritrea. Whole-rock U and Th isotopic analyses show 230Th excesses up to 50% in basalts <10 000 years old from the surrounding Oss lava fields. The 15 ka rhyolites also have 30–40% 230Th excesses. Similarity in U–Th disequilibrium, and in Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic values,...
