Two active mud volcanoes on the Atlantic continental margin of Morocco were sampled during a 1999 expedition on the R/V Professor Logachev. The active mud volcanoes (named Yuma and Ginsburg) are each about 4 km in diameter, rise 150–250 m above the seafloor and are the first active methane-related mud volcanoes identified in this region. Gravity cores from the crest of the active mud volcanoes recovered methane hydrates (clathrates). Thirty-five pore water samples were extracted and analyzed...

During the flights of the University of Washington's Convair‐580 in the Southern African Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI 2000) in southern Africa, a phenomenon was observed that has not been reported previously. This was the occurrence of thin layers of remarkably clean air, sandwiched between heavily polluted air, which persisted for many hours during the day. Photographs are shown of these clean air slots (CAS), and particle concentrations and light scattering coefficients in and...

Abstract. A 5 weeks experiment (1 June to 5 July 2000) took place at a mountain site, Mt Cimone (44°11' N, 10°42' E, 2165 m a.s.l.), that is representative of Southern Europe background conditions. During this field campaign, a comprehensive characterisation of trace gases and radicals, involved in the production and destruction of O3, as well as of chemical, physical and optical properties of the aerosol was done. Atmospheric gases and aerosols were measured continuously over the 5 weeks...

This work aims to decrease the sulfur content of the Egyptian coal by using column flotation technology to be suitable for various applications. In this study, the column flotation parameters as air flow-rate, wash water, frother dosage and feed rate with its solid percent were studied. A clean coal was obtained containing 1.01% total sulfur with a yield of 82%, from Maghara coal (Sinai-Egypt) which contains 3.3% total sulfur as raw coal.
