The impacts of climate change on agriculture may add significantly to the development challenges of ensuring food security and reducing poverty. We show the possible impacts on maize production in Africa and Latin America to 2055, using high-resolution methods to generate characteristic daily weather data for driving a detailed simulation model of the maize crop. Although the results indicate an overall reduction of only 10% in maize production to 2055, equivalent to losses of $2 billion per...

Cross-sectional studies have repeatedly observed that African American adolescents are less likely to smoke when compared to White and Hispanic adolescents. Although much is known among high school samples, few scientifically based studies have reported these race and ethnic differences in cigarette smoking among younger samples. This study employed a secondary analysis of data from a 3-year middle school violence prevention project. The study design was a 3-year serial cross-sectional...

Of the 515,000 maternal deaths that occur every year worldwide, 99 percent take place in developing countries. Women In the developing world have a 1 in 48 chance of dying from pregnancy-related causes; the ratio in industrial countries is 1 in 1,800. Of all the human development indicators, the greatest discrepancy between industrial, and developing countries is in maternal health. The stimulus for this study was the question - Can current program strategies reduce maternal mortality faster...

Camfranglais is a newly created language, a composite slang used by secondary school pupils in Cameroon, West Africa. It draws its lexicon from French, English, West African Pidgin, various Cameroonian indigenous languages, Latin, and Spanish. Secondary school pupils use it among themselves to exclude outsiders while talking about such matters of adolescent interest as food, drinks, money, sex, and physical looks. There are four sections: language in the Cameroon educational system;...

We determined the nutritional status of children less than five years of age in an area in rural western Kenya with intense malaria transmission, a high prevalence of severe anemia and human immunodeficiency virus, and high infant and under-five mortality (176/1,000 and 259/1,000). No information is available on the prevalence of malnutrition in this area. Three cross-sectional surveys were conducted between 1996 and 1998 to monitor the effect of insecticide-treated bed nets on child...

This article examines the progress of primary education in Madagascar. The challenge facing policy makers is enormous: how to maintain (or indeed, improve) learning across schools within Madagascar based on the data from the Conference des Ministries de l'Education des Pays Ayant le Francais en Partage in five African countries where common tests were administered to second- and fifth-graders. Beyond documenting the aggregate differences across sectors, the extent to which differences across...

A hydrological modelling at a catchment scale has been used to investigate the impact of climatic and land use change on water resources in data scarce Tropical Africa using a distributed precipitation-runoff modelling system. The model divides a catchment into homogeneous hydrological response units, providing the ability to impose changes in climate or land use spatially. Model parameters were either estimated from different existing data or by calibration against measured discharge data...

The Second Education Sector Development Project - APL Phase Two for Lesotho will finance the construction of new primary schools, the expansion of existing secondary schools, and a new one hundred bed hostel facility for male and female students at Thaba Tseka Technical Institute. As the exact locations for the new schools were not identified at the time the project was being prepared, the exact numbers and situations of affected persons are not addressed in this framework. The resettlement...

Teachers' beliefs related to teaching practices, knowledge, and social relations in and beyond the classroom were studied in urban schools serving African-American children primarily. Two hundred forty-four teachers from six schools completed surveys about their beliefs. Of these teachers, 94% taught grades kindergarten through five, and 10% taught grades six through eight. Five factors emerged from the survey. Factor 1, culturally congruent, contains 14 items that described beliefs...

This study investigated the relationship between urban teachers' beliefs and student outcomes, reflecting teachers' beliefs related to the beliefs in previous qualitative literature on effective teachers of African American children. A subset of participating teachers surveyed in a larger study (46 out of 244) was identified from two of the original six elementary schools. The schools served predominantly African American students from low-income families. In the larger study, teachers'...
