Abstract The global pursuit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals underscores the importance of combating inequality, with climate change emerging as a significant threat, especially in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). This commentary explores the profound impact of climate change on the lives of women in Africa, shedding light on a critical issue where 80% of the female population in LMICs grapples with its far‐reaching consequences. Climate change is exacerbating...

The study investigated how to enhance the quality of secondary education through professional development of teachers in Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study and one hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive survey research design guided the study. The population of the study comprised 5396 (5,133 teachers and 263 principals) in 263 public secondary schools in six Education Zones in Anambra State. A total of 579 respondents (513 teachers and 66...

Objective This study examined the prevalence of amphetamine use and its associated factors among in-school adolescents in Sierra Leone. Design Data for the study was sourced from the 2017 Sierra Leone Global School-based Health Survey. Percentages with confidence intervals (CIs) were used to present the prevalence of amphetamine use among in-school adolescents. A multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was employed to examine the factors associated with amphetamine use. The results...

This study delves into the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on 06 February 2023, claiming more than 50000 lives. Applying the event study method, with the market model estimation over days (−255, −1) and (0,+5) event window, to the daily returns of 382 listed firms, we show that the Turkey-Syria earthquake significantly affected the stock returns. The average abnormal return decreased from −0.79% on event day (t) to −11.04% on t+2. The cumulative impact on...

Climate change directly impacts the source, mode and volume of sediment generation which can be observed in the rock record. To accurately model source to sink systems, in addition to hinterland geology, tectonics and transport distance, a thorough comprehension of the climate is essential. In this study we evaluate the role of climate on Cretaceous sediment delivery into the Senegal Basin, NW Africa, using data recorded from extensive sampling of basinal sediments. This is achieved through...

This qualitative research study investigated critical contemporary issues faced by first-year students at a University of Technology in South Africa. Drawing from interviews with five participants, the study illuminated three major challenges: academic pressures during the transition, financial constraints, and technology integration. The findings revealed that adapting to new pedagogical methods and academic expectations causes stress and a sense of inadequacy. Financial burdens stemming...

Abstract This study explored the pedagogical beliefs held by South African physics teachers towards inquiry approaches. A significant curriculum goal of school science in most countries is for learning to happen through inquiry. A similar goal is expressed in the South African school science curriculum. The findings of a quantitative survey that was administered to 166 teachers showed that teachers reported having a predominantly constructivist pedagogical belief suggesting a tendency to...

This study examines Moroccan teachers’ acceptance and use of Microsoft Teams, Morocco’s official educational platform for distance education. To investigate the factors that affect teachers’ decision to accept and use this platform, the study employs an exploratory quantitative research design and adopts the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) as the conceptual framework. The overall results indicate that many participants never used Microsoft Teams, and a significant...

Climate change led an increase in the frequency of severe droughts, the effects of which are exacerbated by a lack of water storage. Despite increasing research on global-scale total water storage (TWS) change and drought prediction, basin-scale long-term hydrological drought, TWS change, and El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence in East Africa (EA) remain unexplored. In this paper, we used multiple approaches, of ensemble machine learning (ML) and weighted averaging, to conduct a...

Previous study has shown that functional imagery training (FIT) to utilise positive mental imagery in response to negative affect could improve alcohol-related outcomes. The current study aimed to replicate whether this negative affect focused FIT would improve alcohol-related outcomes in hazardous student drinkers in South Africa at four-week follow-up. 50 hazardous student drinkers who reported drinking to cope with negative affect were randomised into two groups. The active group (n = 25)...
