On May 21st, 2003, a M w = 6.8 earthquake struck the central part of northern Algeria causing extensive damage in the Boumerdes area, 40 km east of Algiers. It is among the largest events to occur in the western Mediterranean over the past 25 years. A new Co-60 Teletherapy Machine was commission at the Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, Nigeria, in April 2000. A total of three hundred and fifty seven patients, with histologically confirmed malignant tumours, were treated with external beam radiation therapy since commissioning, 36 months ago. During a ten-years period from January 1991 to December 2000, 103 patients with histological confirmation of cervical cancer were managed at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin. Eighty-Three of these patients with adequate information in their folder constitute the study group. Overall, 103 cases of confirmed cervical carcinoma were seen and constitute 2.6% of gynaecological admissions. The prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium infection was investigated among primary school pupils in Ekiti State by questionnaire survey in 601 schools between 1997 and 1998. A total of 9,551 (24.4%) were positive by the survey. 3483 (22.4%) of the girls and 6,069 (25.7%) of the boys were infected.
