This chapter examines the resistance and specifically the role of research in enhancing the capacity of working class organizations to confront neoliberalism. It will assess the methodology of some mass-based community initiatives that challenge the new state to fulfill its social justice promises. The chapter specifically details the struggle to challenge the costs of education for working class communities, policy flaws and the policy response of South Africa’s state education departments.
