Statistics reported at a March 1999 conference of African Ministers of Education revealed that the social return on investing in the education of girls in sub-Saharan Africa is the highest in the world (24.3% for basic education and 18.2% for secondary education). Abstract Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), governments, church groups, and individuals are increasingly conducting or funding conflict resolution training and related projects in war‐torn countries. These projects aim to promote peace, reconciliation, and dialogue, and to impart practical skills and methods for resolving conflict nonviolently. The authors argue that for these goals to be met, considerable time and care must be invested in assessing cultural differences, political...

Benefits associated with a college degree are multiple. From a societal standpoint, a college graduate is far less likely to commit a crime and approximately 30% less likely to be unemployed compared to a student who has simply earned a high-school diploma (Hossler, Braxton, & Coopersmith, 1989; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991). From an individual perspective, each additional year of schooling past high school seems to prolong life by 0.4%, or nearly 2 percentage points, upon graduation from...

Summary This paper reports some results of a study exploring pre‐service and novice teachers’ views on mathematics teaching and how these views may be influenced by school experience. They were equally divided between pre‐service and novice teachers. Findings from qualitative data analysis of individual semi‐structured interviews show...
