This paper shows that during the 1990s, and before the 1998-2000 border war with Eritrea, the gender gap in education in Eritrea has widened on the national level, and large regional disparities have persisted. The gender gap appears to be linked to lower female teacher participation and limited employment opportunities. The widening of the gender gap is likely to have a long-term negative impact on both economic growth and poverty reduction.

Teachers involved conduct small-scale action research projects on aspects of the role of language in classroom practice or school policy which influence the teaching of their subject. The project takes as its...

Helium, argon and lead isotopic ratios have been determined for volcanics from two of the youngest Cape Verde Islands, Santo Antão and Fogo. Helium isotopic ratios range from radiogenic 4He/3He values of 224,000 (3.2 R/Ra) to more primitive values of 52,000 (13.8 R/Ra), which suggest a contribution from different reservoirs to the magmatism at the Cape Verde Islands. 40Ar/36Ar isotopic ratios range from slightly higher values than atmospheric up to around 1250. Pb isotopic ratios are...

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are the leading cause of the global burden of disease and have been causally linked with exposure to pollutants from domestic biomass fuels in less-developed countries. We used longitudinal health data coupled with detailed monitoring of personal exposure from more than 2 years of field measurements in rural Kenya to estimate the exposure-response relation for particulates smaller than 10 mm in diameter (PM(10)) generated from biomass combustion.55...

Abstract – Many medical and dental professionals in African nations believe that school teachers, through attendance of a short workshop, can be trained to provide oral health education. This increases the number of professionals available and is regarded as an important way forward in improving oral health. Objectives: The current study assesses the effectiveness of an oral health education programme administered by schoolteachers in a district in Zimbabwe over a period of 3.5 years....

Paralleling recent developments in South Africa, initiatives in language policy and education reform in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia over the last three decades have opened up new possibilities for indigenous languages and their speakers through bilingual intercultural education.
