African American urban sixth graders (28 males and 22 females), the majority of whom tested at or above grade level on the Iowa Basic Skills Test, were interviewed about 2 methods of selecting students for a summer science program. One method focused on student grades, and the other method focused on student interest in science. Subjects initially did not distinguish one method as significantly fairer than the other. By the end of the interview, however, approximately one-third of the...

The epistemic hierarchies of a sample of 360 African-American college students were assessed using the Psycho-Epistemological Profile and compared with norms for white college students ( N = 1342). A much lower proportion of the black students had Metaphorism as the dominant mode than their white peers. Large differences were also found in the proportions of black ( n = 229) and white ( n = 417) women with the preference for Empiricism as their primary epistemic tool. The results do seem to...

This paper examines, via an exploratory approach, the factors in doctoral programs that may potentially guide, motivate, and influence African American doctoral students to pursue careers in higher education. Interviews with 42 participants, 23 current students and 19 former doctorate recipients, were conducted, placing emphasis on interviewing more respondents from the education field, the field of study of the majority of African Americans. Five types of relationships that African American...

There is evidence in the literature indicating that western education was used not to promote the healthy coexist.mce of the western and the African cultures but as a sanitizing and civilizing medium. This document describes the need to design science education that adequately meets the needs of the African in such a way that the African view of nature, sociocultural factors, and the logical dialectical reasoning embedded in African metaphysics are taken care of within a changing global...

Of the 24 positive isolates, Staphylococcus aureus accounted for 14 (58 per cent), Klebsiella pneumoniae for four (17 per cent), Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus albus for...

Suicide is currently recognized as one of the leading causes of death of adolescents and young adults worldwide. A representative sample of all high-school students in Addis Abeba in 1989/90 academic calendar was surveyed to estimate life-time prevalence and risk factors of suicide attempts. 14.3% of the adolescents reported having attempted suicide. 17.5% usually felt hopeless. Suicide attempts were strongly and linearly associated with hopelessness, grade, and heavy alcohol intake. No...

This paper examines and recommends strategies for the education and training of archivists at the East African School of Librarianship (EASL) in the 1990s and beyond. First, it states the objectives of the National Information System (NATIS) in relation to coordinating the development of library and information services, a major component of which is education and training. The author then defines some terms and gives brief notes on education and training programs offered by selected African...

Abstract On the basis of social identity theory, the author hypothesized that social identity (ethnic category) and salient intergroup comparisons would produce greater preference and perceived homogeneity within the ingroup than with the out-group. To test this hypothesis, surveys including stimuli of both African and Chinese American membership were administered to both an African American and a Chinese American sample of students. The results for both samples strongly support the...

This is a personalised, substantially revised version of a similar, NEPI-authorised paper delivered at the 11th Annual SAALA Conference in Cape Town, 5–8 July 1992. The aim of this article is to propose a policy, which I have termed “National Additive Bilingualism”, for language planning in South African schools under a future democratic dispensation. I will also discuss some of the challenges to and implications of implementing such a policy such as National Additive Bilingualism for the...

Prior to April 1, 1993, the education system in South Africa was fragmented along racial lines. Five departments of education existed, each with its own political head. This paper presents findings of a study that examined the organizational climate of the Department of Education and Training, which regulated education for the 10 major black groups (excluding independent states and self-governing states). The study sought to: (1) test the validity and reliability of the Organizational...
