Few Malagasy children and adults are aware of the rare and unique fauna and flora indigenous to their island-continent, including flagship lemur species. Even the Malagasy ancestral proverbs never mentioned lemurs, but these same proverbs talked about the now extinct hippopotamus. Madagascar's geography, history, and economic constraints contribute to severe biodiversity loss. Deforestation on Madagascar is reported to be over 100,000 ha/year, with only 10-15% of the island retaining natural...

This chapter brings in the local Syrian participants. The student demonstrations in the late 1930s targeted a wide variety of issues, including Syrian government policies, the status of religious minorities, the teaching of religion in the Christian schools, the moral standards of teachers in state schools, and the Mandate administration. As a result of their activism, students became a threat to the French administration and the Syrian National Bloc alike, and the local authorities...

Abstract Although the importance of evaluating the effectiveness of conservation education programs cannot be underestimated, few evaluations of these programs and their resulting impact on the environment have been conducted. A partnership between scientists, educators, and local administrators on an evaluation program has been developed to evaluate a model of education program evaluation that includes short‐ and long‐term evaluation of (1) knowledge and attitude change, (2) behavior...

A notable contrast in modern economic history has been the rapid economic growth of China and the slower and volatile economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. As the engagement between the two continues to grows, there will be a greater cross-fertilization of experiences. Total factor productivity comparisons suggest that capital accumulation in China coupled with more efficient factor usage explains the differential with Africa. Although the two have similar populations and patterns of...

European American students are more likely delayed entrance in kindergarten than African American students. This study examined whether age at kindergarten entry influences the reading proficiency skills of African American and European American students at the start of kindergarten, at the end of first grade, and at the end of third grade. Using a sample of 1,320 African Americans and 4,399 European American public school students from the Early Childhood Longitudinal -Study-K-5, the study...

We study the specific influence of African dust on each one of the categories of Atlantic hurricanes. By applying wavelet analysis, we find a strong decadal modulation of African dust on Category 5 hurricanes and an annual modulation on all other categories of hurricanes. We identify the formation of Category 5 hurricanes occurring mainly around the decadal minimum variation of African dust and in deep water areas of the Atlantic Ocean, where hurricane eyes have the lowest pressure....

The past twenty-five years has witnessed dramatic changes in the world, including the rise of international trade, unprecedented movement of people across national borders, tremendous advances in communication technologies and new forms of knowledge. Due to the changes of this magnitude, the American public is aware of new and formidable global and international problems that did not exist before. However, these changes also provide the conditions for applying new solutions to domestic...

Vast empirical evidence underscores that exporting firms are more productive than non-exporters. As governments accordingly pursue export-promoting policies we are interested in the firmness of these conclusions with respect to African small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and the influence of the destination of export trade. Using a micro-panel dataset from five African countries we confirm the self-selection. We apply propensity scores to match exporters and use a...

Sustainable water resources development of Malawi needs a thorough assessment of the impact of climate change on the future water levels of Lake Malawi because Lake Malawi together with its outflowing Shire river water sys- tem is Malawi's most important water resource for hydropower generation, water supply for industrial and domestic use in the city of Blantyre and its surrounding urban areas together with irrigation water in the Lower Shire Valley (LSV). Any changes in the hydrological or...

The series of droughts of the past three decades that affected the Sudano-Sahelian zone of West Africa, particularly Niger, Volta and Senegal basins impacted the water resources, ecosystems and the fragile economies of at least 13 of the 16 countries of the region.Declining rainfall, highly variable in time and space has resulted in more than proportionate decrease in river discharges, and declining level of freshwater bodies. This situation translated into falling groundwater levels and...

Doctors are scarce in Malawi and, therefore, a considerable amount of work is carried out by paramedical clinical officers (COs). Although their training is limited, they take care of the majority of patients in the country. The CO project started in the Southern region of Malawi in 2005 in order to improve the number of surgical and gynaecological operations and skills of COs. Nine district hospitals and eight Christian Health Organisation of Malawi (CHAM) hospitals were visited and all...

Snakebite is an important cause of amputation and disability in rural communities throughout the tropics. However, the details of the causes, types and estimates of disability are lacking. This report describes 16 snakebite victims who had amputations, including two who had above-knee amputations. The patients presented with limb swelling (16), gangrene (15), ischaemia (4) and three had possible compartment syndrome. All the patients used ineffective time wasting remedies that were...
