Earthquakes result from the rapid release of stored elastic strain in the lithosphere, usually in the form of sudden movement of portions of the earth’s crust along faults. Earthquakes are classified as shallow focus at depth less than 70 km, intermediate focus between 70 and 300 km and deep focus >300 km. The objective of the study is to find the depth distribution of earthquakes focal depths in African lithosphere. It also finds the relationship between the focal depths and the earthquake...

Almost one-third of the population in developing countries is under age 15. Hence improving the effectiveness of policy interventions that target adolescents might be especially important. We analyze the intention to participate in training programs of adolescent girls in Uganda, a country with perhaps the most skewed age distribution anywhere in the world. The training program we focus on is BRAC's Adolescent Development Program, which emphasizes the provision of life skills,...

There is increased awareness that success among small-scale entrepreneurs in developing countries requires more than microfinance, and that an important limiting factor for business growth is the level of human capital among the entrepreneurs. The present paper uses a randomized control trial to evaluate a business training program in Tanzania. Our results show that there is a positive average treatment effect on business knowledge. It also appears that training has a stronger effect on the...

The disidentification hypothesis predicts that African American boys achieve less in school than African American girls do because boys have less personal investment in doing well academically (i.e., they are disidentified). When do such gender differences emerge? Using self-perception and achievement data from longitudinal studies of children ( N = 113) at high risk for academic problems because they come from low-income families, the authors examined whether elementary school—aged and...

This work completes the study Dr. Richardson published in 1986 as Christian Reconstruction: The American Missionary Association and Southern Blacks, 1861-1890 by continuing the account of the American Missionary Association (AMA) from the end of Reconstruction to the post-World War II era. The propagation of Electromagnetic waves in millimeter band is severely affected by rain and dust particles in terms of attenuation and de-polarization. There is a growing interest in the effect of dust particles on the propagation of microwaves. This is brought by the increasing number of terrestrial and satellite links in those regions that encounter dust and/or sand storms. Computations of these effects require knowledge of electrical properties of the scattering particles and climate...

Abstract: In spite of over a half century of interventions and waves of “reforms,” higher education in Africa today consists of institutions, systems, and practices that lack distinct values and goals, or a mission and vision connecting them to the major challenges of their local and global contexts. What is needed in African higher education is true transformation, which will involve practical and epistemological ruptures with previous ways of doing things and a reconstruction of...

This paper links a utility theoretic model based on internalized norms with the results from a novel public good experiment in Ghana. The results indicate that, on average, people are motivated by condition- al cooperation or reciprocity: i.e. they want to contribute more if others have contributed more in the previous round. We also find evidence of learning, in the sense that people’s contributions decrease over time even when others’ contributions are held constant. Moreover, our results...

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. In the turn of the 21st century, a significant number of engineering universities in the United States (US) and Europe have opened branches in the Middle East and North Africa region. In 2004, the American University of Kuwait (AUK), in collaboration and partnership with Dartmouth College, opened its doors to offer the first liberal arts education with an engineering program in the region.
