The theoretical argument in support of trade liberalisation is based, in part, on exports that foster dynamic efficiency gains primarily through learning and technological upgrading. Using data collected in the motor vehicle components industry, the article explores whether there is any evidence in the South African manufacturing sector to support this hypothesis. Although the conclusions are tentative, the author finds no unambiguous empirical support for the argument that, in the South...

The influence of inadequate iodine intake on the thyroid status and cognitive performance of school children in Saki, a town within the goitre belt of South-western Nigeria with known environmental iodine deficiency, was assessed. One hundred and ninety-seven (197) study subjects from Saki and seventy (70) appropriately matched control subjects from Moniya, near Ibadan, the Oyo State capital were recruited into the study. The subjects were apparently healthy primary school pupils between the...

Using the Cervero and Wilson theoretical framework, a qualitative case study of an AIDS community services agency was conducted using interviews with staff and board...

Major, trace and isotope data are presented for volcanic rocks from southwestern Ethiopia. The studied samples consist of mafic and felsic rocks, with the mafic lavas having generally transitional chemical characteristics between alkaline and tholeiitic, a feature that is typical of the Ethiopian province. The mafic samples have low Mg numbers (Mg#<55, excluding sample E145) and low compatible element contents, such as Ni and Cr suggesting that these lavas have undergone fractionation en...

We examine the relationship between educational inputs—primarily pupilteacher ratios—and school outcomes in South Africa immediately before the end of apartheid government. Black households were severely limited in their residential choice under apartheid and attended schools for which funding decisions were made centrally, by White-controlled entities over which they had no control. The allocations resulted in marked disparities in average class sizes. Controlling for household background...

To investigate whether free radical metabolism is changed due to isoflurane treatment and, if so, to elucidate the role of changed free radical metabolism in the nephrotoxicity.Fifteen guinea pigs were used in the study. Five were treated with isoflurane in oxygen, five with oxygen and five were controls. Animals were exposed to isoflurane and oxygen three times. Each treatment was performed for 30 min once a day for three consecutive days. Activities of free radical enzymes, superoxide...

The note examines the practical, and literate skills that students acquire at different levels in West African Koranic schools. It is a long-standing parallel system of education, yet, relatively unknown to development planers, thus seldom taken into explicit account in their policies, and strategies. Islamic educational systems have been present since the seventh century, and by the tenth century, communities of Muslim merchants, and scholars were established in many commercial centers...
