The Debunscha Maar (DM) is located on the southwest flank of Mount Cameroon, an active stratovolcano on the Cameroon volcanic line (CVL). Here, we present the physical characteristics of the pyroclastic deposits at DM with the aim of deciphering tephra emplacement mechanisms, evolution of water–magma interaction and reconstructing the stratigraphy beneath the maar. From GPS measurements, the crater has long and short axes of 500 m and 320 m, respectively. Generally, the pyroclastic deposits...

This study measured the economic impacts of climate change on crop and livestock farming in Africa based on a cross-sectional survey of over 8000 farming households from 11 countries in east, west, north and southern Africa. The response of net revenue from crop and livestock agriculture across various farm types and systems in Africa to changes in climate normals (i.e. mean rainfall and temperature) is analysed. The analyses controlled for effects of key socioeconomic, technology, soil and...

Post-1994 South Africa adopted a new education system that would seemingly break with the past practices of the apartheid education system (Naicker, 1999) and produce citizens prepared for a democratic dispensation in South Africa. Accordingly, the new system of outcomes-based education was introduced in order to create the critical mass needed for the transformation of society. Thus, schools would become the sites where democratic practices for democratic citizenship would be fostered....

Drought is one of the major factors affecting maize production most especially in the Southern Guinea Savanna Zones of Nigeria. Scientists working on maize research have demonstrated the ability of local farmers to double maize yield through drought resistant varieties and agronomic practices. This study was evaluated on farm trial of Drought Tolerant (DT) maize varieties and hybrids in the Southern Guinea Savanna Zones of Nigeria. Mother-baby trial approach was used for the study. The...

Based on case-study data from a small group of Kenya primary schools, this paper first examines local-level variations in the impact of the 2003 Free Primary Education programme. The effects varied widely: in two ‘high-impact’ schools, intakes more than doubled; while in several others, effects were negligible, either because local demand was already fully met, or in two cases because the schools had erected barriers to increased enrolment (the ‘high-barrier’ schools). A second section...

Abstract The authors use population census data to project school enrolment for Kenya. They also employ current education sector budget and national revenue base statistics to model the sector budget and to forecast the revenue base growth required to sustain universal primary education (UPE). The 2003 fiscal year unit cost of education is used as the base value for computing the budget needed to fund UPE through 2015, the year by which the international community aims to achieve UPE. The...

The present study relates to the interpretation of gravity and seismological data in the Boumerdes area (Eastern part of the Mitidja Basin, Algeria), in relation to the earthquake of May 21, 2003 (Mw=6.8). The residual anomaly and the horizontal gradient maps made it possible to obtain the basement shape and gravity discontinuities. The seismological data processing of the aftershock sequence recorded by 16 tri-component seismological stations allowed the location of 1987 events during the...

Introduction The World-Wide-Web (www) may be the most important application of the Internet. Before the Web, the Internet grew rapidly within the education and research communities, allowing exchange of information using applications like email, ftp, telnet, and gopher. The Web's ease of use, platform independence, integration of text and graphics and totally open structure made it an attractive option to everyone. At first, its use was confined to research and higher education, since few...

METHODS: Eight members of the Rwandan National Cycling Team were recruited to participate in an 8-week study. Nutritionally adequate meals were provided 3 days per week at training camps; 4 days per week cyclists...
