Abstract This interdisciplinary book interprets early human evolution in the context of the local ecology and specific habitats. It assesses carefully the possible role of climate change in driving early human evolution. Bringing an ecological and biogeographic perspective to recent fossil finds, the book provides a new synthesis of ideas on hominid evolution. It will be a valuable resource for researchers in physical, biological, or paleoanthropology, evolutionary biology or biogeography.

Abstract In this chapter I consider the ecological factors that potentially influenced the temporal association between periods of major climatic change during the Late Miocene and Plio-PleistocLene, turnover pulses among large mammalian herbivores, and evolutionary trends in hominid clades. I propose that certain features peculiar to the African continent promoted the adaptations leading to early hominids and ultimately the first humans, including the following: The critical episodes of...

Introduction The concept of juvenile delinquency is so complex that it is perceived differently by psychologists, sociologists, legal practitioners and religionists. Nevertheless, the consensus is that Juvenile delinquency is an anti-social behaviour (Adeloye and Aina 1990). Humanity recognizes today that human rights are indivisible and that the realization of one right leads to the reinforcement and promotion of another. Man has the right to education, freedom of speech and thought, and...

While adult cigarette consumption is declining or stagnant in the US, it is growing in Egypt at a rate of 4–5% a year.1 In the US...

Trainees in the library and information profession in Africa depend on textbooks emanating from outside Africa because of the dearth of local books. Even supposedly local books are generally patterned along Western lines and they are either descriptive or historical, so none of them can really be used as a basic textbook for any of the courses offered in library/ information science schools. This has greatly affected the training of library and information professionals in Africa as trainees...

The focus of this article is on the possible role of information in attenuating the susceptibility to weather events. The analysis points to two conclusions. First, even when we have a fairly good understanding as to the relationship between crop output and factors of production, that understanding does not extend very well to situations of extreme distress. That is, our ability to predict crop outcomes appears to remain limited. To some extent, this appears to be because harsh weather...
