This study focuses on training needs assessment (TNA) in a Libyan context. It is the first of its kind involving a large Libyan public utility company in relation to investigating training processes and TNA. The study adopts interpretivist and subjectivist paradigms; both are linked to qualitative research. A qualitative and inductive approach was used to generate in-depth data and information from people responsible for training and from those who have received training. A qualitative...

This paper investigates the reading practices of forty-five second year EFL Yemeni undergraduate students using the Four Resources Model of multiliteracy practices. The Four Resources Model of multiliteracy practices organizes reading practices into four key practices: code breaking, text participating, text uses and text analysing levels. Quantitative and qualitative methods, designed based on the Four Resources Model constructs, were used to collect data from a sample of students studying...

The unusual occurrence in the In Tifar trachyte neck (Tazrouk district, Hoggar volcanic province, Sahara, Algeria) of the fluorian biotite–fluororichterite association is presented. The two mineral species were previously unknown in the Hoggar and their association is uncommon worldwide. Ti-rich biotite has 28–40% OH sites occupied by fluorine, hence the use of the modifier “fluorian”. Sodic–calcic fluororichterite has more than 55% OH sites filled by fluorine, hence the use of the prefix...

Through a secondary analysis of standardised test data, the paper reviews community involvement in Malawian primary schools and examines the extent to which it explains variation in pupil test scores. In so doing, the study deconstructs the concept of community involvement, demonstrating that it is not a unitary concept but rather made up of multiple effects which can be categorised into different modes: “learner support”, “financing” and “networking”. The framework developed may help with...

Private providers operate in a complex educational environment in South Africa, which makes quality assurance cumbersome. The education authorities have gradually recognised that private providers have a valuable role to play in the provision of education and training in South Africa and the need to create a more enabling regulatory environment for private providers. To probe the views of stakeholders on the quality assurance challenges they face, the study adopted a mixed methods design...

The purpose of this study was to investigate how teachers’ real-life experiences, during teaching and learning, in three aspects of their lives, namely as school learners, as tertiary students and as teachers, influenced their current educational practices. Transformative learning, which is based on psychoanalytic and critical social theories, was used as a theoretical framework for this study. Of particular interest was to discover how, and to what extent, teachers’ learning experiences had...

The addiction to tobacco remains a significant problem in the context of healthcare staff. We conducted this study aiming to assess the smoking habits among medical students and their knowledge about smoking. A prospective study was undertaken between October and November 2012 in which a standardised, anonymous, self-completion questionnaire in French was administered to 100 medical students at the Charles Nicolle hospital. A total number of 100 medical students were included in this study....

Abstract The province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa has a recent estimate of 8000 unqualified and under-qualified teachers. Some of these teachers have an undergraduate degree, but do not have a professional qualification. In order to become professionally qualified, teachers with a degree must complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), which is traditionally a programme offered to fulltime ‘pre-service’ student teachers. However, part-time students have already been...

Tamarindus indica L. is an important multipurpose tree, indigenous to Africa, now introduced worldwide and known for its drought tolerance. The effects of drought on tamarinds, especially at seedling stage, are hardly investigated. However, this information is important for its conservation and domestication. In a growth chamber experiment we investigated the water relations of African tamarind seedlings under short-term soil drought stress. Initially tamarind seedlings can be considered as...

The African baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) is an important multi-purpose fruit tree with high potential for domestication in drier Africa. Although adult individuals are well-known to be drought resistant, only little has been reported on how young baobab trees can survive drought. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine short-term soil drought effects on water relations of baobab seedlings. Baobab seedlings used a limited amount of stored water to buffer daily water deficits (~ 8.5...

Proverbs are an aspect of culture cherished all over the world and preserved in language which is the medium for expressing them. Also, proverbs have psychological, cosmological and socio-cultural roots. They make special demands from the decoder, as their interpretations usually require more than sheer linguistic processing. The philosophical and didactic implications of proverbs make them quite useful for the teaching of, especially language, at any level of education. However, many...

As the bus from Lilongwe to Blantyre careered bumpily south, darkness fell rapidly and I began to wonder whether this was really such a good idea. It was eight years since I had been in Malawi, where I worked as an orthopaedic surgeon from 2002 to 2005. Having subsequently returned to the UK and spent the past five years working for the nHS, I had reinvented myself as an anatomist. this involved anatomy demonstrating at University College London and Imperial College, teaching on the London...

Two possible adaptation scenarios to climate change for Sub-Saharan Africa are analyzed under the SRES B2 scenario. The first scenario doubles the irrigated area in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2050, compared to the baseline, but keeps total crop area constant. The second scenario increases both rainfed and irrigated crop yields by 25% for all Sub-Saharan African countries. The two adaptation scenarios are analyzed with IMPACT, a partial equilibrium agricultural sector model combined with a water...

Despite prolonged scientific research in Western Europe on the subject-matter of climate change and greenhouse emissions, a big gap in knowledge and understanding of what constitutes climate change and how to combat the phenomenon still exists in Africa. This gap creates uncertainty in the continent coupled with the tragic conclusion that Africa may be the worst hit continent in terms of the negative impact of climate change to sustainable livelihood. Climate changes will affect regional...
