ABSTRACT A comprehensive, three-year study was conducted in 1982–1985 of petroleum-producing regions of Nigeria. This study was designed to provide the scientific basis for determining the special requirements of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of Nigeria that need to be accommodated in oil-pollution control regulations for both sudden spills and the continuous releases associated with chronic oil pollution. The study plan was composed of extensive literature review and field...

Hearing thresholds of 2,667 white South African goldminers were determined in a cross-sectional survey. Median hearing thresholds at 1,000 Hz were comparable to those expected for men living in a developed society. For the frequencies 3,000-6,000 Hz, which are most affected by industrial noise, hearing thresholds were greater than expected and worsened with age relative to expected losses. The percentage of social impairment of hearing ranged from 0% in the youngest age group to 21.6% among...

Abstract : This paper analyses the causes of the 1984 drought in Kenya and how the Kenya government reacted to the situation. Kenya had previously enjoyed good climatic conditions, and the rain had enabled her to produce good harvests. The country's economy, it should be noted, depends largely on agriculture. The manner in which the Kenya government handled the famine which was caused by the 1984 drought, should serve as an example for other drought stricken countries to follow. But the...

The extended family principle provides the ideological basis for social organization, orders social relationships and regulates communal life in most traditional African societies. However, some recent research findings and informed opinions on the effects of Western education, urbanization and industrialization on the extended family system have raised disturbing questions regarding the future of this important institution. The inconclusive nature of the available evidence as it relates to...

Tanzania has both a high infant mortality rate (137/10000 live births) and child mortality rate (231/1000), with most deaths reflecting the sequelae of low birthweight. Although 80% of pregnant women attend a prenatal clinic at least once, 50% deliver at home. Similarly, most children are taken to child health clinics initially, but attendance falls to 20% by 5 years of age and only half of Tanzanian children complete the immunization schedule. In response to this situation, the Ministry of...

S ummary The responses of mycorrhizal corn ( Zea mays L.), sudan grass [ Sorghum vulgare (Piper) Hitch.], and big bluestem ( Andropogon gerardii Vitman) under drought stress were compared. Although growth of each of the plant species benefited from the mycorrhizal fungus under adequately watered conditions, inoculation had no effect on the growth of corn or sudan grass when cyclic drought stress was imposed on these plants. In contrast, growth of mycorrhizal big bluestem was significantly...

The severe drought of 1973–1975 in Somalia had major impacts on pastoral populations, many of whom moved into specially established camps where food, water and medical assistance were provided by the government and international agencies. At the end of the drought it was decided to settle the remaining 120,000 people in six settlements, three of which were agricultural and three oriented towards fishing. This paper analyzes these settlements, with particular attention paid to agricultural...

ABSTRACT Conditions in Kenya and Poland concerning the labor market and educational preparation for jobs are discussed, along with public policy. In the decade of the 1980s, both nations reached saturation in the labor market and underwent changes in the demand for university-trained workers. Kenya needed highly trained personnel to replace expatriates following the end of colonization. Poland needed highly trained personnel in its change to a socialistic, industrialized nation. Within the...
