African American youth are affected disproportionately by sexually transmitted infections (STIs), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and teenage pregnancy when compared to other racial groups. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the To Help Young People Establish (2 HYPE) Abstinence Club, a behavioral intervention designed to promote delayed sexual activity among African American youth ages 12–18 in Atlanta, Georgia. The intervention included...

Botswana arts curriculum was introduced in 2002 at lower primary and 2005 at upper. The curriculum combined art and craft, design and technology, home economics, business studies, drama, dance, music and physical education disciplines under the umbrella term Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). Given this disciplinary diversity, CAPA exists amid claims that it is overloaded and that teachers are not well equipped to teach the diverse subject matter, skills and processes. The purpose of...

This research was carried out to assess the impact of the centralised electronic student records management system at Africa University. The parameters of the research were to find out whether the current Student Information System at Africa University was adequate, consistent, and reliable. Questionnaires were administered to students and staff who use the system. It was then concluded the SIS at Africa University is only centralised in theory since there is no interaction between the...

Majority of Namibian learners are not native speakers of English, that is, they barely speak English in their homes. Yet English is the medium of instruction in many Namibian schools. Many Namibian learners therefore face the double challenge of acquiring the English as the language of teaching and learning (Medium of Instruction) and at the same time developing the appropriate reading and writing proficiency needed to meet the requirements of the curriculum. This situation has created...

The main focus of the study was to determine the knowledge level of the certificate of secondary education geography teachers when teaching the concepts of meteorology, environmental education and climate change. The study involved observing and interviewing 24 classroom teachers who were randomly selected from both rural and urban Morogoro. Teachers could demonstrate ability to present the causes, extent and effects of pollution and wastes including most of the concepts of the elements of...

The pivotal role played by education to growth and development of an individual cannot be underestimated. In spite of this, some regions in Kenya, Turkana County included, still experience low level of participation in education. Many factors have been attributed to this phenomenon. However, few studies have addressed the teacher factors influencing the level of participation of secondary school students in school. The study therefore focused on establishing this using descriptive survey...

The high cost of maize in Kenya is basically driven by East African regional commodity demand forces and agricultural drought. The production of maize, which is a common staple food in Kenya, is greatly affected by agricultural drought. However, calculations of drought risk and impact on maize production in Kenya is limited by the scarcity of reliable rainfall data. The objective of this study was to apply a novel hyperspectral remote sensing method to modelling temporal fluctuations of...

Climate change is projected to alter the growing conditions of chickpea in many areas and there would be substantial reduction in grain yield of the crop due to drought. We used CROPGRO-Chickpea model to evaluate climate change impacts and adaptation options at two different locations. The simulation result at Sirinka indicated that chickpea grain yield could increase by12% and 13% during the 2030s and 2050s time periods without the direct effect of CO2 fertilization. Similarly, grain yield...

Healthcare provider training in Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmOC&NC) is a component of 65% of intervention programs aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity. It is important to evaluate the effectiveness of this.We evaluated knowledge and skills among 5,939 healthcare providers before and after 3-5 days 'skills and drills' training in emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmOC&NC) conducted in 7 sub-Saharan Africa countries (Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria,...

A comparative biochemical analysis was made of the water quality in Omar Bek Drain and interconnected spot of Damietta Branch of the River Nile, Egypt. Fish community in the drain was species-poor; only two survivor fish, with erratic population dynamics, namely Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus were observed. The pH values in all localities lied on the weak alkaline scale. The midstream and downstream drain localities stored greater numbers of HPC, total coliforms and fecal...

This study employs a Ricardian modelling approach to measure the impact of climate change variables such as temperature and rainfalls on smallholder famers’ crop net revenue in Togo. The obtained results show that climate has a nonlinear effect on crop net revenue. In rainy season, the marginal impact of temperature on farmers’ net revenue is negative, while the impact of rainfalls is positive. The scenarios of decrease of rainfalls and/or increase of the temperature show negative impacts on...

The aim of this study was to describe the gendered experiences of African male learners living in child- and youth-headed households. The participants included seven male learners, identified through a non-profit organisation in the Soweto area. Data were collected through individual interviews, collages, and essays and analysed using qualitative content and thematic analysis. The theoretical framework included the works of Erikson and Nsamenang. The findings indicated that cultural...
