A workshop funded by the USA Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) was an effort by Zambia toward prevention and control of AIDS. The lack of educational materials about AIDS for a low-literate audience was the major problem addressed by the workshop. Other problems include the lack of collaborative effort in the development of materials on AIDS, and the lack of skills needed in the development of such materials in Zambia. 1 of the objectives of the workshop was to launch the...

This paper discusses potential flaws in study by Williams, Gill, and bruland (1986) dealing with the extreme disequilibria between uranium and thorium series nuclides in alkalic carbonatite lava specimens. It discusses the apparent discrepencies between chemical compositions of lava which were reported from the same eruption. Clarification is made on the actual timing of eruptions in this volcanic region and the effects this would have on the petrogenesis interpretation of these rocks.

Between its establishment in 1955, and the beginnings of its collapse in the student rebellion of 1976, the Bantu Education system significantly restructured the patterns of social reproduction of South Africa's urban African working class. This paper seeks to examine this restructuring process. It argues, firstly, that Bantu Education has to be understood as a system which helped reproduce differentiated forms of labour power. The system underpinned the gap that opened up between urbanised...

Abstract Forced to be innovative, a short course conducted in Nigeria for urban planners produced good results, although the bulk of the direction and teaching was provided by government town planners with no previous teaching experience. A crucial factor appears to have been the course structure, which was not only based upon learning while performing a project, but also required repetition of the project tasks in two cycles. The learning was enhanced because the project was a piece of work...

Eight‐four secondary schools participated in the...

Abstract The term ‘scientific literacy’ (SL) has become a way to present a balanced formulation of several legitimate or competing purposes for science teaching in our schools. It has now become increasingly clear that no citizen can be literate in the modern sense until he has an understanding and appreciation of science and its work. If the populace is to appreciate the general nature of scientific endeavours or its potential contributions to a better way of life, then the public must...

The school library situation in Kenya is on the whole gloomy. Only a handful of schools can afford to employ professional librarians. Out of a total of three thousand secondary schools in Kenya, less than forty have positions for trained para-professionals. Teacher-librarians do not receive any allowance for their additional responsibilities and the majority have never had any training in librarianship. Clerical staff and pupil assistants are employed in many school libraries. Lack of...
