Abstract Droughts and soil erosion are among the most prominent climatic driven hazards in drylands, leading to detrimental environmental impacts, such as degraded lands, deteriorated ecosystem services and biodiversity, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. In response to the current lack of studies combining drought conditions and soil erosion processes, in this study, we developed a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS)-based approach to assess soil erosion and droughts,...

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and associated risk factors of vancomycin-resistant enterococci among patients upon admission. One hundred and seventeen samples from newly admitted patients at University of Benin Teaching Hospital were screened. Ten (8.55%) samples were positive for vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) isolates based on chromogenic and molecular screenings. The speciation prevalence revealed that 8/10 (80%) was...

Drought frequency and magnitude are increasing, posing significant risks to surface water bodies, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Leveraging on moderate resolution satellite data, such as Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI), offers unique opportunities for monitoring surface water availability and drought impacts. In this study, we assessed the extent to which Landsat-8 OLI and Sentinel-2 MSI satellite data can be used to...

This study presents petrography, mineral chemistry, whole-rock major and trace elemental systematics for Recent pyroclastic deposits from volcanic edifices of Baïgom and Petpenoun, located in the Noun Plain graben along the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL), Central Africa, to better understanding their petrogenesis and geodynamic environment. The samples are mainly ash, lapilli and scoria, belonging to two different magmatic series: an alkaline series and a sub-alkaline series. Petrographic and...

The study is entitled “Staff Development and Curriculum Implementation of Secondary Schools in Nyamasheke District, Rwanda”. This research was conducted with the purpose of analyzing the impact of Staff development on Curriculum implementation in secondary schools of Nyamasheke District. The study had three specific objectives. Firstly, it was designed to analyze the status of training related to Staff development in schools of Nyamaheke District. The second objective was to find out the...

The goat breeding improvement program played a crucial role in addressing the challenges of climate change vulnerability among the smallholder farmers of climate change-vulnerable communities in Gokwe North district, Zimbabwe. Using cross-sectional data from 217 small-scale farmers in four randomly selected wards in the Gokwe North district of Zimbabwe, the study examined the effect of the program on households’ climate change adaptation capabilities using proxy variables including food...

Continental rift systems are first-order emitters of deep-sourced CO2 but their impact on the global budget is largely unknown. For instance, the estimate of the total amount of deep-sourced CO2 released by the East African Rift (EAR) is largely undocumented due to the small number of direct measurements available and the impracticability of remote sensing methods induced by atmospheric noise. This study explores the degassing budget and the structural control of soil CO2 emissions at an...

The aim of this study was to establish perceptions of early childhood teachers on integrated curriculum and strategies they can use to improve integrated planning in early childhood centers in primary schools of Serenje District. The study used a phenomenological design on a sample of twelve participants. The study collected data using interviews, classroom observations and document analysis that was analysed thematically. The study found that ministry of education curriculum policy for...

Ruraqueer students constantly experience higher levels of victimization, and negative university experiences than their urban and suburban peers. Further, rural students have limited access to university resources while, queer events and workshops related to queer community, as well as university-based ongoing activities to support positive sexuality and gender identity development are scanty. This has been worsened by extant research written from an ‘outsider’ perspective lacking breadth...

Iron deficiency anemia is a leading cause of morbidity among adolescents (aged 10-19 years), especially in low- and middle-income settings. Few policies and programs have targeted adolescent health. Evaluate the effectiveness of school-based supplementation with iron-folic acid (IFA) or multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) in addressing anemia among adolescents in Burkina Faso. In this cluster-randomized trial, 3,123 secondary school students aged 10-18 years in Burkina Faso were either...

Senegal, a coastal country in the semi-arid Sahel region, faces significant risks associated with climate variability and climate change. Climate change is already affecting vulnerable people’s wellbeing and it’s expected to contribute to the (re)emergence of vector-borne, some water-borne and heat-related diseases, which will have disastrous consequences on the country’s fragile health system and socio-economically vulnerable population. Our contribution to the National Adaptation Plan...

Abstract Groundwater is a major resource for drinking water, especially in developing countries, where it is less expensive to treat than surface water. Today, the resource is highly susceptible to pollution, particularly as a result of human activity. This review was based on a literature review and critical analysis of models for estimating the groundwater vulnerability. The results show that the deepest porous aquifers are the least susceptible to pollution, whereas those in karstic and...

To ensure inclusive, equitable quality education, and encourage educational opportunities for lifelong learning worldwide; the United Nations set sustainable development goals (SDG) to achieve quality education. Thus, using SDG 4 quality education and system theory, this research seeks to identify the effects of educational management on quality education in rural and urban primary schools in Ghana. Moreover, the mediating role of internet facilities in educational management and quality...

Introduction Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are the largest contributor to the global burden of injury, and in 2016 were among the five leading causes of global disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). In regions with limited emergency medical services (EMS), training lay first responders (LFRs) has been shown to increase availability of prehospital care for RTIs, but sustainable mechanisms to scale these programs remain unstudied. Methods Using a training of trainers (TOT) model, a 5.5-h LFR...

This study investigates climate, weather characteristics, and air pollution during the third COVID-19 wave in South Africa. During this time, a decrease in of SO2 and NO2 column mass was observed. The investigation displays a positive trend in for tropospheric Ozone (O3) mass mixing in winter over the last two decades with a fitted slope of 1.0005 kg/kg. Despite the negative trend for the daily changes (for all 12 months) of the total column mass density for PM2.5 during the year before the...

Higher education in South Africa has experienced a number of challenges for the past three decades: from the days of apartheid to post-apartheid South Africa, to the challenges of transforming the higher education landscape. The merger of several South African higher education institutions in 2004 created a plethora of challenges to add to the already existing ones. These challenges were political, sociological, structural and fiscal in nature. The desire to address these challenges has in a...

This paper seeks to understand the significant challenges of Ghana’s free senior high school (SHS) policy and the roles that non-profit organisations play in addressing them. Findings reveal non-profit interventions such as establishing new school buildings, providing teacher training, addressing inequality issues, equipping graduates with employable skills and evaluating the policy. Such public–non-profit partnerships can help the government achieve its vision of free SHS education for all young Ghanaians.

Abstract During and after recent La Niña events, the decline of the eastern East African (EA) March‐April‐May (MAM) rains has set the stage for life‐threatening sequential October‐November‐December (OND) and MAM droughts. The MAM 2022 drought was the driest on record, preceded by three poor rainy seasons, and followed by widespread starvation. Connecting these dry seasons is an interaction between La Niña and climate change. This interaction provides important opportunities for long‐lead...
