Gas bursts from tropical crater lakes constitute a hitherto unrecognized natural hazard, which claimed 37 lives around Lake Monoun in 1984 and 1,746 lives in 1986 around Lake Nyos in Cameroon, west Africa. Studies of these events indicate that the lethal gas clouds were dominantly CO 2 which exsolved catastrophically from deep waters of the lakes, producing in the case of Lake Nyos a gas cloud of 1.94 times 10 6 tons CO 2 . Carbon‐isotope data indicate a magmatic source of the carbon...

Pediculosis is an important and common health problem in both urban and rural areas of Kumba. Out of a total of 2,312 children examined (1,462 urban and 850 rural), there was a rather disquieting overall infestation rate of 31.6% in the urban and 32.6% in the rural schools, respectively, and there was a much higher incidence of infestation among girls (36.3% urban, 35.1% rural) than boys (26.9% urban, 30.0% rural). Pubic infestation was more rampant among girls aged 13-15 years (0.3%) than...

Abstract Annual, seasonal and storm rainfall characteristics are analysed for the Njemps Flats, a semi‐arid area near Lake Baringo in the Kenya Rift Valley. Storm rainfall is analysed in terms of intensity, timing, duration and total storm depth. Storms characteristically occur in the early evening, with one storm of around 2 h making up the daily rainfall totals. High intensity rainfall seldom persists longer than 30 min. The maximum 30 min intensity recorded was 80 mm/h, the maximum 60 min...

In this, the third of a three-part series of articles in which we emphasise the urgent need for and propose steps towards a comprehensive strategy for the control of HIV infection, we highlight the fundamental importance of an education campaign and the three critical essentials for a successful campaign. The first concerns the responsibility of the State in administering the programme, in providing adequate funds on an on-going basis and in delegating responsibility for the day-to-day...

The newspaper quotes Dr. Justin Nguma of the national AIDS control committee as saying the condoms are being donated by the World Health Organization. Students, soldiers, and police officers were chosen...
