The spatial organization of localized showers in the summer rainfall region of South Africa has been studied by means of spatial correlation functions. A predominant linear arrangement of parallel shower belts has been identified, with an orientation between W–E and WNW–ESE. No differences were found in this respect between the driest years in the 1960's and the wettest ones in the 1950's and 1970's, but a linear trend was absent, or at least not prevalent at any fixed orientation, during...

Three hundred and eight primary level boys and girls from the Madang, North Solomons, and Southern Highlands Provinces of Papua New Guinea were tested for conservation of number, length, quantity, and area. Previous studies have shown that acute zinc deficiency results in impaired platelet aggregation in humans and rats as well as decreased sensitivity to such aggregating agents as ADP, arachidonate and collagen. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of zinc deficiency on platelet function and other pathology in the guinea pig. Guinea pigs of mixed sex were fed a purified diet based on soybean protein (1 ppm Zn) or a similar control diet (100 ppm Zn). In one trial weanling guinea pigs,...

Volcanoes have affected people and our human ancestors for millions of years. Volcanic activity ranges from mild lava flows to colossal explosive eruptions that can even cause climatic downturns for the whole world. Volcanic ejecta can form very fertile soils, and lava flows can provide stones useful for making cutting, scraping, and grinding tools. Volcanoes present hazards and opportunities, and many human societies learned how to cope with the risks while taking advantage of volcanoes. In...

Water resources in South Africa are limited. It is inevitable that in a climate of expanding industry and economy, total salt loads discharged both from point and non-point sources will increase. The effect of this on these resources will soon assume crisis proportions unless effective treatment for the removal of salt loads from effluents is exercised and rigid constraints imposed on effluents not conforming to prescribed quality standards. The mining industry is a large user of water and a...
