Boisa Island is the tip of a Quaternary island-arc volcano. It consists of an older cone made up of porphyritic, amphibole-free, mafic rocks, and two younger cumulodomes of hornblende-bearing high-silica andesite. Twenty-six Nigerian rivers were sampled during the dry season periods of 1977 and 1978. The samples were analysed for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5); Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrite and phosphate. Seventeen of the river examined were found to be more or less unpolluted six of them being of high quality. The remaining nine were found to be ‘polluted naturally’.

Abstract DMFT scores, total sugar intakes and snack habits were determined in 1918 South African Black pupils (923 rural, 995 urban) and 724 White pupils (English and Afrikaans speaking) aged 16–18 years inclusive. The relationship between Plasmodium falciparum gametocytemia and the complement components C3, C4, and C3b was investigated in 141 ambulant rural Nigerian school children. Three groups were studied. Group 1 included 42 children with circulating P. falciparum gametocytemia in which the mean titers of C3, C4, and C3b were 145.4 +/- 22.6 mg/100 ml (72%), 60.5 +/- 0.2 mg/100 ml (149%), and 64.0 +/- 5.9 mg/liter (65%), respectively.
