Korle Bu Eye Unit based in Accra, Ghana is linked with Moorfields Eye Hospital in a VISION 2020 partnership. Its primary aim is to support and strengthen ophthalmic services within the eye unit at Korle Bu. This article outlines a recent initiative whereby ten ophthalmic Korle Bu nurses undertook a three-day training course with a final day of assessment to become trainers of slit lamp skills.

The objective of this article was to discuss the roles of higher education institutions towards a knowledge-based Nigerian economy in the fast changing globalised economy. In achieving this objective, issues that drive knowledge in developed countries and the need for Nigeria to adopt a knowledge-based approach to economic development were examined.
