The African state has received numerous analyses in academic literature. The vast majority of these studies focus on the essence of the state rather than how it is experienced and lived by its citizens and therefore sacrifice empirical knowledge of state function in favour of abstract conceptualisation. Much academic literature, especially the neopatrimonial approach dominant in political science, examines African states through the prism of Weberian logic and suggests that, because states...

Samples of effluents from 3 textile processing factories F(1), F(2) and F(3), were characterized for their pollution potential. The concentrations of solids were found to be 1020, 790 and 1,380 mg/l total solids for the factories 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The BOD’s and COD’s were 342.8 and 542.4 mg/l for F(1), 123.2 and 224.6mg/l for F(2) and 456 and 738.4mg/l for F(3). The pH for the effluents were 9.36, 8.98 and 9.44 for F(1), F(2) and F(3), respectively. This implies that...

It has been observed that most engineering graduates, such as electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, etc, end up taking employment with banks, accounting outfits and other non-engineering outfits. It has also been lamented by many graduates that they find little or no relationship with what was taught in school and what is obtainable in the job market. Industries who hire fresh graduates almost always have to retrain them before they could be gainfully employed in their various industries....

I challenge the notion that student interactions with the urban lumpenproletariat and ‘militariat’ serve as evidence for their desire...
