The birth of the new South Africa marks one of the most profound events of the close of the 20th century. Indeed, the historical events culminating in the first truly democratic elections in South Africa in 1994 have ramifications for people around the globe. Millions worldwide have experienced renewed faith and a revitalized sense of hope with the demise of the infamous apartheid system and with the many transformations, large and small, that are taking shape in this youngest democratic...

This article reports on a qualitative study using focus group discussions about alcohol binge drinking with tenth grade male high-school students. Groups were run separately with binge drinking and non-binge drinking adolescents in three different communities. The Theory of Planned Behaviour with two additional constructs was used to provide a theoretical framework for the semi-structured discussions and for the analysis of the data. When I left South Africa in 1968 academic medicine was flourishing. The best graduates wanted to pursue academic careers and there was fierce competition for posts in teaching hospitals. Although not in itself a manifestation of profound research the world's first heart transplant had revealed just how sophisticated medicine was in the country. The general medical scene was less satisfactory. Few black doctors were being trained—seven in 1966; 11 in 1967; 10 in 1968—and the distribution of...

The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), in cooperation with Ghana's Ministry of Health, trained 43 trusted members of communities in which home delivery remains the norm for most women in hygienic methods of child delivery, how to identify risk factors during pregnancy, when and where to refer clients for medical assistance, and how to prepare nutritional foods for pregnant women and mothers from locally available foods for 15 days over a 5-week period. The traditional birth...

Several series of experiments are reported that investigate learning in the Africanized honey bee. In the first series, classical conditioning of proboscis extension was studied by confining bees to small metal tubes where they received pairings of an odor with a 3-s feeding of sucrose. After a number of odor-sucrose pairings, the bees began to extend their proboscis to the odor. Controls include Unpaired, Discrimination, and Pseudoconditioning Groups. This technique was used to look at...

Abstract Tanzania uses the T & V system of agricultural extension. At this moment this is a rather top-down system for the transfer of technologies, but the Ministry is convinced that the extension system would become more effective if it was more participatory and demand-driven. The Village Extension Officers are taught impact points, which they are expected to passon to the farmers. However, most farmers do not follow these recommendations, often because in formulating these...

Abstract South African society has undergone immense change in recent years and arguably one of the most fundamental challenges has been transforming the education system from one that was strongly authoritarian, subject‐centred and based on political indoctrination, to one which embraces notions of child‐centredness, diversity, multicul‐turalism and multilingualism. The key idea of this article is ‘intervention’, exploring the ways in which theatre ‘intervenes’ in the South African...

This study provides some evidence, although not very strong, that self-esteem is associated with the likelihood of smoking among African-American children. In a sample of 1,256 children, those with lowest levels of self-esteem were twice as likely to have ever smoked as those with highest level of self-esteem (95% C.I. = 1.10–7.78). Girls, more so than boys, have an increased risk of smoking at the lowest level of self-esteem. Girls with the lowest level of self-esteem were 2.8 times (95%...

Abstract The primary purpose of the research is to describe and explain the attitude of secondary agriculture school students toward agriculture, and to determine students' perceived usefulness of agriculture as compared with other subjects. Background Skin disease is usually the second most common reason for consultation by children in rural clinics in developing countries. The majority of epidemiological studies published so far are based on the analysis of medical records from specialised centres. These, however, account for expressed needs only and do not portray the real prevalence of paediatric skin disease at the community level. Aim To determine the prevalence of skin disease in unselected paediatric populations from...

African American men suffer one of the highest attrition rates of any racial or gender group in college. This study evaluated a retention program designed to increase academic self‐concept by engaging participants in a 10‐week course that taught career planning, cultural awareness, job interviewing and resume writing skills, and academic responsibility. The results of the analysis suggest that the course had no effect on academic self‐concept.
