An analysis of 560 perinatal deaths occurring among 13629 deliveries over a five-year period at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Nigeria is presented. The overall perinatal mortality rate was 33.7 per 1000 compared with 80.9 for the previous period 1974-1976. Factors leading to this improvement such as an improvement in health services are considered. (ANNOTATION)

We discuss work completed to date on the 1980 Algerian earthquake, and introduce a description of the earthquake in terms of rupture propagation using the nomenclature of fracture mechanics. The pattern of Trichomonas vaginalis infections at the Outpatient Clinic of the University Teaching Hospital in Calabar, Nigeria was determined for the two-year period (January 1981 - December 1982). Of the 5520 patients examined in 1981, T. vaginalis was found in 10 males (0.11%) and 57 females (1.03%). Riboflavin status was assessed in 42 secondary school students before and after supplementing the food intake with 5 mg riboflavin daily for 7 days. Energy, protein, and riboflavin intakes were determined on foods actually consumed by each student. Riboflavin nutriture was based on urinary riboflavin excretion and erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity coefficient. Ocular filariasis was observed in an African student living in Missouri. The adult female Loa loa worm was seen migrating under the conjunctiva. There was 34% eosinophilia and a high microfilaremia. The patient was successfully treated with diethylcarbamazine (Hetrazan) with no appearance of allergic manifestations.

House-to-house and school lameness surveys were conducted in one urban and two rural regions of the United Republic of Cameroon.
