This paper aims to explain the trend of mother tongue (MT) education in Uganda by examining particularly government’s practices towards MT education. MT education was (re)introduced in Uganda in 2006/2007 due to disappointing literacy acquisition by learners with the hope of improving literacy skills among particularly rural children. Based on data gathered from rural government and private schools in rural areas, this paper questions what exactly it is that government seeks to reclaim,...

In April 2013, an image gained traction within Nigerian social media. In an undisclosed city, likely Lagos or Ibadan, a young man stands by the roadside, raising a cloth banner aloft in an eye-catching shade of neon green. In this part of the world, a young person soliciting passing vehicles with advertisements or goods for purchase is an expected component of the urban scenery. The presence of this young man, however, is curious. Overdressed for petty street hawking, he wears a crisp pair...

The testicular cancer (TCa) incidence is increasing in many countries, with age-standardized incidence rates up to 7.8/100,000 men in the Western world, although reductions in mortality and increasingly high cure rates are being witnessed at the same time. In Africa, where rates are lower, presentation is often late and morbidity and mortality high. Given this scenario, awareness of testicular cancer and practice of testicular self-examination among future first response doctors is very...

This paper provides a comprehensive impact evaluation of the Brazilian National Service for Industrial Training (SENAI). We examine whether such a system could provide lessons for Sub-Saharan Africa, where most countries face rising urbanization, high youth unemployment, and acute skills shortage. While we find evidence of positive self-selection into SENAI training, we also find that it improves labour market outcomes across the educational and race distributions, especially for young...

Elephant inhabiting arid and semi-arid savannas often experience periods of drought, which, if prolonged, may cause mortality. During dry periods, elephant aggregate around water sources and deplete local forage availability. However, the relationships between adult elephant mortality and both high local elephant density and forage availability close to water during dry periods remain unexplored. We hypothesized that elephant mortality is higher: a) when dry periods are longer, b) closer to...

The fact that the Southern African Association (SAAIR) is nearing its 25th year, is evidence that Institutional Research (IR) has built a strong presence in South African higher education.Unfortunately, this is not yet evident in other countries in the region. The professional practice that has become known as "institutional research" is, of course, much older than the Association that was established by IR practitioners.Similarly, IR encompasses much more in South and Southern Africa than...
