The continuous rise of energy demand worldwide combined with the decrease of natural resources such as fossil fuel represents a huge energy problem which facing humanity. Industry as well as consumers must rethink how to produce and use energy at low cost price. Renewable Energy (RE) applications and energy savings are keys to meet this challenge in a sustainable way and reduce the percentage of carbon dioxide (CO <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"...

The late Miocene (11–9 Ma) volcanic rocks of Kef Hahouner, ~ 40 km NE of Constantine (NE Algeria), are commonly classified as lamproites in literature. However, these rocks are characterized by an anhydrous paragenesis with plagioclase and Mg-rich olivine phenocrysts, set in a groundmass made up of feldspars, pyroxenes and opaque minerals. Thus, we classify the Kef Hahouner rocks as ultrapotassic shoshonites and latites, having K2O > 3 wt.%, K2O/Na2O > 2.5, MgO > 3–4 wt.%, SiO2 < 55–57 wt.%...

The primary objective of this analysis is to investigate the causal effect of mother's schooling on under-five health - and the passageways through which schooling propagates - by exploiting the exogenous variability in schooling prompted by the 1994 universal primary schooling program in Malawi. This education policy, which saw the elimination of tuition fees across all primary schooling grades, creates an ideal setting for observing the causal influence of improved primary school...

Emigration has contributed to a shortage of doctors in many sub-Saharan African countries. Specialty training is highly valued by doctors and a potential tool for retention. Yet not all types of training may be valued equally. In the first study to examine preferences for postgraduate training in depth, we carried out a discrete choice experiment as part of a cross-sectional survey of all Malawian doctors within seven years of graduation and not yet in specialty training. Over August 2012 to...

The Buzwagi gold mine, found in the Neoarchaean Nzega greenstone belt of northern Tanzania; is underlain by mafic volcanic rocks which are associated with a massive body of ultramafic rocks that are considered to be cumulates. The mafic–ultramafic rocks association are cross-cut by ~ 2.71 Ga grey TTG and ~ 2.67 Ga pink microcline K-rich granites. The Buzwagi mine mafic volcanic rocks are Fe-rich tholeiites (MgO = 3.59–7.67 wt.%, Fe2O3 = 12.5–17.7 wt.% and Mg# = 30–56) that are characterized...

This study aimed to evaluate whether (regarding the Surviving Sepsis Campaign [SSC] guidelines) the training of Malawis scarce medical staff is adequate. Hospitals in Malawi have a severe shortage of human resources and therefore rely heavily on junior staff. Sepsis is a leading cause of admission to hospitals particularly in resource poor countries. It is associated with a high mortality rate. The SSC guidelines have been developed to help frontline staff diagnose and treat patients with...

Water demand in islands, focused in agriculture, domestic use and tourism, is usually supplied by groundwater. Thus the information about groundwater distribution is an important issue in islands water resources management. Time Domain Electromagnetic (TDEM) provides underground resistivity distribution at greater depths and is of easier application than other methods. In this study TDEM technique was used for groundwater prospection in two volcanic islands with water supply problems, the...
