This study employed data from the 2005/06 Uganda national household survey to identify adaptation strategies and factors governing their choice in Uganda's agricultural production. Factors that mediate or hinder adaptation across different shocks and strategies include age of the household head, access to credit and extension facilities and security of land tenure. There are also differences in choice of adaptation strategies by agro-climatic zone. The appropriate policy level responses...

There are important differences in autonomic function and cardiovascular responsiveness between African Americans (AA) and Caucasian Americans (CA). This study tested the hypothesis that carotid baroreflex (CBR) responsiveness is impaired in normotensive AA compared with normotensive CA at rest. CBR control of heart rate (HR) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was assessed in 30 nonhypertensive male subjects (15 AA; 15 CA; age 18-33 yr) with 5-s periods of neck pressure (NP; simulated...

The impact of anthropogenic climate change on potato production in north east South Africa (Limpopo Province) is studied. Decreasing trend in the area rainfall due to altered dynamics and thermodynamics of rainfall forcing caused by climate change, resulted in rivers and streams to dry. Analysing rainfall time series of the past 50 years (1960-2009), shows that north east South Africa has experienced 60 percent less rainfall than normal and high frequency of drought recurrence. Consequently,...

Detailed sedimentological and biostratigraphical studies of successions in the eastern Anti-Atlas (SE Morocco) focused on changing depositional environments and reconstructions of sea-level changes during the late Famennian to middle Tournaisian. The investigations cover a transect from the central Maider to the easternmost and southern Tafilalt regions near the Moroccan/Algerian border. The Moroccan data are compared with the standard succession of the German Rhenish Massif and with the...
