Among Egyptian college students in Cairo (n = 100), this study examined the relationship between sleep paralysis (SP) and anxiety symptoms, viz., posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trait anxiety, and pathological worry. SP rates were high; 43% of participants reported at least one lifetime episode of SP, and 24% of those who reported at least one lifetime episode had experienced four or more episodes during the previous year. Fourteen percent of men had experienced SP as compared to 86%...

The relationship between crime and education were explored within the South African context from a national and provincial perspective. Drawing from 2001 census data, the inmate and the general population were compared to determine predictors of criminal engagement. With the second dataset on maximum security prisoners in the province of Free State, we explored whether education can predict the type of crime. While education does not delineate crime types in the Free State province, the...

The view that ‘Africa should learn from China’s development’ has been expressed throughout Africa, from the chairperson of the AU through senior government officials to analysts, scholars and ordinary citizens. China’s 40-fold increase in GDP and its lifting of 500 million people out of poverty in the last 35 years are reason enough, but China has also established itself as a major presence in infrastructure development across Africa.

Large amounts of untranscribed audio data are generated every day. These audio resources can be used to develop robust acoustic models that can be used in a variety of speech-based systems. Manually transcribing this data is resource intensive and requires funding, time and expertise. Lightly-supervised training techniques, however, provide a means to rapidly transcribe audio, thus reducing the initial resource investment to begin the modelling process. Our findings suggest that the...

This paper studies the relationship between a microfinance institution (MFI) and its loan officers when officers discriminate against a particular group of micro-entrepreneurs. Using survey data from Uganda, we provide evidence that loan officers are more biased than other employees against disabled micro-entrepreneurs. In line with the evidence, we build an agency model of a non-profit MFI and a biased loan officer in charge of granting loans. Since incentive schemes are costly and the...

E- learning is gaining more popularity due to the technological development and the personalization it offers for learners and organizations. Most e-learning platforms support group work and collaboration between learners, which is a desirable educational practice. Thus, virtual team members must be flexible to achieve their goals in a cooperative environment. In order to improve learners experiences, and to encourage collaboration between them, we propose and validate a theoretical model...
