Abstract Nabro volcano, situated to the east of the Afar Rift Zone, erupted on 12 June 2011. Eruptions at such off‐rift volcanoes are infrequent, and consequently, the plumbing systems are poorly understood. We present posteruption Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the TerraSAR‐X satellite and posteruption continuous seismic activity from a local seismic array. Interferometric analysis of SAR data, reveals a circular, 12 km wide, signal subsiding at ∼200 mm/yr. We inverted for the...

There are few direct measurements of anthropogenic climate-forcing emissions in Africa, making it difficult to accurately assess current emissions and to anticipate changes in future emissions. Emissions databases suggest that sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), home to less than 15% of the world's population, is responsible for 11% of anthropogenic methane (CH4) and 18% of anthropogenic nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions globally, though this includes substantial emissions from biomass burning that would...

The HIV/AIDS has emerged through the last three decades as the most devastating epidemic humankind has ever faced. In the Eastern Cape, HIV/AIDS is rife and the forecast is that HIV/AIDS will have devastating effects among university students unless they change their sexual-behaviour.This research study attempted to highlight the socio-cultural factors which are responsible for HIV/AIDS transmission within the University of Fort Hare with the aim to mobilize and actively involve the students...

This paper uses new data available from a school census in Togo to analyze differences in primary school performances across regions. Our results, obtained from a stochastic frontier analysis, suggest that differences in efficiency explain only part of the observed variation, while resource availability is the most important driver of performance differences. In addition to this, the paper notes that resources are distributed quite unevenly among regions and schools. By improving access to...

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the optimal age category at which primary school pupils from low income families perform their best in literacy at grade 6 level. Age is a potential learning barrier because of its link to cognitive development as well as its influence on interactions between pupils within classrooms. The sample consisted of 7041 grade 6 pupils, spread in 226 schools across six major urban slums in Kenya. Using descriptive statistics, we examine the...

This article presents data collected in a qualitative study of Nigerian English language teachers working in Nigeria. Many of these Nigerian teachers have not had a formal introduction to reflective practice. Most of them work in conditions of constraint and challenge, experiencing a lack of resources, support and often working with large classes. The study was focused on establishing whether they saw themselves as reflective and could articulate ways in which reflection was important for...

Governments in the developing countries are doing enough to ensure student's engagement in entrepreneurship activities in order to reduce the level of unemployment among graduates. However, among these students lack of entrepreneurial intention is very common. Therefore, this study examined the entrepreneurial intention among Nigerian students in UUM. The study used cross-sectional research design with quantitative questionnaire approach. The study used convenience sampling technique to...

Recent studies discuss the link between climate change and violent conflict, especially for East Africa. While there is extensive literature on the question whether climate change increases the risk of violent conflict onset, not much is known about where a climate-conflict link is most likely to be found. We address this question by analyzing the spatial distribution of the factors commonly associated with a high exposure and vulnerability to climate change, and a high risk of violent...

The purpose of this study is to look at student inherent characteristics (gender and age) as correlate to academic performance in mathematics education. To carry out this, two research questions and one null hypothesis were stated. The correlation survey design was adopted for this study. The study analyzed data collected from two hundred students randomly drawn from two selected secondary schools in Enugu metropolis. The statistical tools employed to analyze the data collected were descriptive...

New preventive strategies for atherosclerosis are needed. In this study, we tested whether a new therapeutic approach consisting of low-dose treatment with a statin and sartan combination could prevent atherogenic diet-induced impairment of the arterial wall in guinea pigs. Twenty-five Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs were randomly assigned to five experimental groups: 1) normal diet; 2) atherogenic diet (AD); 3) AD + a low-dose atorvastatin and valsartan combination (5mg/kg/day and 2.4mg/kg/day,...

Communities in Malawi selected 15 children deemed ‘‘at-risk’’ – predominantly orphans – in Class 6 of each of 20 intervention schools to receive learning materials, support from the community and a school ‘‘buddy.’’ An experimental evaluation found that dropout was reduced by 45% across intervention schools compared to 20 control schools. The program had spillover effects, indirectly reducing dropout among older pupils in the class not deemed at-risk. These findings imply that age, and not...

Language learners’ pragmatic ability enables them to interact competently in communication events. Pragmatics main distinguishing feature from other branches of language study is that it portrays how language is used in real social interactions. Pragmatics ability has a broad base as it requires knowledge not only in theoretical content such as phonology, semantics, speech acts, but also in applied language subjects like sociolinguistics, cultural studies and communication. This inclusive...

Climate change and variability is a major threat to sustainable development across the globe. Paradoxically, smallholder farmers to a great extend contribute to the spread and also hold the key to effective management of climate change and variability. Despite their centrality in climate change and variability, not much is known about smallholder farmers and climate change adaptation. As a contribution towards addressing this need, the present study analysed the role played by gender in...
