18O/16O analyses were made on a set of leucite-bearing igneous rocks from a variety of localities around the world. The samples chosen for study all have relatively primitive characteristics, such as low SiO2 contents (42–52 wt.%). Whole-rock δ18O values from the 10–15 m.y. old Australian leucitites range from +7.1 to +11.0; however, none of these values represents the original δ18O of the erupted lava, as every sample has undergone some subsolidus18O enrichment. The δ18O values of the...

The universality of self-care is well documented but there is a lack of data on the manifestations of self-care in a particular environment: information which is sorely required for health planning purposes. This study conducted in Ibadan, Nigeria, attempts to provide some detailed information on opinions, attitudes and beliefs on self-treatment — an important aspect of self-care. Within the three-month period prior to the study, 80 percent of respondents had self-treated themselves or a...

The increased fees for postgraduate trainees from overseas and their difficulty passing the MRCPsych examination have made some British teachers question whether Departments of Psychiatry should continue to provide training for such doctors. The change in the relationship between old and new Commonwealth countries, and the increased availability of postgraduate training in Nigeria, Kenya or Zimbabwe are other factors to be considered.

The historiography of French colonial educational policy and practice has advanced considerably over the past decade. Not long ago W. Bryant Mum-ford's allegation, “Africans learn to be French,” was taken literally, and most scholars presumed that France, either out of cultural arrogance or blind reflex, brought metropolitan schooling in undiluted form to her colonies. We know better now. Recent studies of education in French West Africa and Indochina have suggested that colonial schools...

Emplacement of endogenous domes and eruption of pyroclastic flows in the Morobe goldfield took place in the interval from 4 to 2.4 m.y. ago. During the later part of this time interval, following tilting of the ignimbrite pile, a maar was generated at Wau. The subjacent diatreme is believed to extend downward for about 1 km to a regional dip-slip fault zone which hosts deeper level gold mineralization at the nearby Ribroaster Mine. Following initial maar formation, hydrothermal brecciation...
