While this book focuses on various aspects of sub-Saharan science education research, this chapter introduces the reader to trends in South African research which pertains to language use and the development of scientific literacy. The rationale for doing so is that I believe that the issues that led a number of South African researchers to focus on language and literacy in science education are sufficiently shared on the continent.
