The Kilimanjaro Agricultural Training Center (KATC) extension approach has disseminated cultivation techniques for irrigated rice across Tanzania. KATC provides training to extension officers and key farmers (KFs). It also helps subsequent farmer-to-farmer (FTF) extension from KFs to intermediate farmers (IFs) and then to other farmers (OFs). The long-term intensive training for irrigated rice was greatly simplified for the dissemination of NERICA1 that was recently released for rainfed rice...

This paper investigates the effect of public education spending on primary education outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We use two primary education outcomes, namely: the net enrolment rate (NER) and persistence to the last grade of primary education (PLG). Employing the random effects estimation method for a panel of 18 Sub-Saharan African countries from 2000 to 2012, we find that public education expenditure exerts positive significant effects on both the NER and the PLG. The results...

Candida species have emerged as successful pathogens in both invasive and mucosal infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Additionally, there is increasing resistance of Candida species to antifungal agents, and this has greatly contributed to the high morbidity and mortality amongst affected patients. In Zambia, little is known about the distribution of Candida species and their antifungal susceptibility patterns from patients with candidiasis. Speciation of Candida species is...

This thesis analyses the contribution of economics and statistics in the transformation of Ghana from colonial dependency to socialist one-party state. The narrative begins in 1948, extending through the years of decolonization, and ends in 1966, when the first postcolonial government led by Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown by a military coup d’etat. Drawing on insights from political economy, the history of economics and the sociology of science, the study is constructed as a series of...

Efforts to develop and disseminate improved cookstoves among biomass-reliant populations have been launched by both Northern and Southern development actors, with the interactions between North and South constantly shaping notions of appropriate technology within local contexts. This paper examines elements of the interaction between the Centre for Household Energy and the Environment (CEHEEN), a local nongovernmental organization (NGO) that set out independently to promote the uptake of...

Using three waves of national representative household level panel data from Malawi, we examine two forms of adaptation to climate change: 1) adopting improved maize varieties and 2) adjusting input quantities and income sources. Our results indicate that climate change induces both forms of adaptation, though only the second appears relevant in determining climate change impacts on net revenue. Adverse trends in climate variables (increased temperature and rainfall variability, and reduced...

We assessed adherence to self-care behaviours and knowledge among adult patients with heart failure on active follow up. Method and results: Hospital based cross-sectional study was employed and patient reported adherence to self-care behaviours and knowledge on heart failure was assessed among 328 adult heart failure...

The master thesis “Groundwater Pollution Transport from Tsumeb Copper Smelter in Namibia” firstly presents the physical conditions of the Tsumeb area i.e. the description of the study area, climatology, geomorphology, geology and hydrogeology. The subsequent part after physical conditions is the monitoring of groundwater quality on the site. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the general geochemical and transport processes that control the behavior of arsenic in the environment. A...
