Teaching ethnomusicology at a South African university as a white female in the context of the 2015–2016 national #FeesMustFall student protests presents a significant challenge. In this article, I discuss the context of Euro-American scholarship on the ethnomusicologist as pedagogue and compare this to the situation in South Africa, using the framing devices of three main statements, namely that all musics are equal, that a culturally diverse music education (and education in...

Abstract Lake Kariba, created in 1958, experienced changes, notably the decline of the Limnothrissa miodon fishery, which have been attributed to climatic change. Air temperatures rose abruptly by 1.1°C between 1980 and 1981, but the temperature of the lake did not follow this pattern. Temperatures at 10 m depth increased by 8% between 1961 and 1971, remained stable until 1984, then declined and by 1992 the temperature was about 7% lower than in 1961. The causes of this are unclear but it...

To date, Zimbabwe does not have an overt and comprehensive language policy. Policy is inferred from language practices in various spaces and from pieces of legislation in education, the media and legal domains. In multilingual schools, teachers make and renegotiate language policy through practices and choices that they make to manage classroom multilingualism. This article examines teachers’ self-reported language ideologies and how they occasioned conflicting language practices with the...

This paper offers an approach to understanding dramatic social change, entwined with belief revision and shifting knowledge. It explores the interplay between rapidly changing material and ideological conditions through the concept of a rupture. Ruptures are breakdowns in existing social and epistemic practices and relations: periods which call into question what is normalized, such that something else can grow through the cracks. Ruptures do not guarantee any particular replacement, but...

Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) accounts for 38.85% of total female cancer cases in Egypt and is the most prevalent cancer among Egyptian women. Early detection of breast cancer increases the effectiveness of the treatment, which results in a better prognosis, reducing the morbidity and mortality rates. Breast self-examination (BSE) is an important screening practice, a simple, economical, and noninvasive screening method for early detection of breast cancer. Methodology: A cross-sectional...

The terms dyslexia and reading disability are often used interchangeably. There are so many children who encounter reading problems in Zambia to an extent that some of them might complete seven years of primary education without the ability to read even a three letter word (MoE, 1992).A study conducted in Zambia by MatafWali (2005) revealed that, 49.1% of the grade three pupils could not read words at all. In addition, 57.5% could not read any single sentence. According to Kelly (2000), the...

Data collected through qualitative content analysis method and in-depth interviews of sources of information and journalists from two daily newspapers in Kenya, the Daily Nation and the People Daily on how they framed climate change stories during part of 2012, the year when the Kyoto Protocol was ending, found that although the Kenyan media cover climate change, these articles are placed anywhere but front page, rarely took leadership positions on any given page and scarcely on top left...

This paper provides data in respect of the questions: How have ordinary citizens, civic educators and community leaders learned about the concepts of...

The policy-making process can be complex and hierarchical and can often disenfranchise many people. Policy dialogues seldom enlist marginalised populations such as girls and young women who are the intended policy beneficiaries of key areas related to their sexuality and well-being. To address this, researchers working with girls and young women are increasingly adopting arts-based participatory visual methods such as photovoice, cellphilms, drawings and collage, among others, to conduct...

Plagued by years of conflict and tragic humanitarian crisis, the people of Yemen face an increasing struggle to survive. Susan Schulman travelled to Yemen and spoke to some of the people trying to make a living in a country where human intervention and climate change have turned a once fertile land into one where water is the most precious and elusive resource of all.◼

Climate and land use change are anticipated to alter the distribution of wildlife, due to their impact on the quantity and quality of forage availability, water cycle, as well as competition for key resources. Using an ensemble of species distribution models (SDMs), we sought to predict changes in the distribution of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) in response to climatic and land cover change in Africa. We found that African elephant distribution is driven predominantly by changes...

This study focused on the assessment of the structural validity of the 28 item adapted Teacher Assessment for Learning Questionnaire (TAFL-Q) in the Kenyan context. The sample consisted of 180 mathematics teachers drawn from 50 secondary schools. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to confirm the hypothesised two-factor model of the original questionnaire. The analysis resulted in a poor fit to the Kenyan sample (CMIN/DF = 2.643, RMSEA = 0.096, SRMR = 0.085, TLI = 0.653, CFI = 0.680). The...

Social cash transfer (SCT) has been recognised as an essential social policy intervention to address poverty and vulnerability. The policy intervention has also been observed as a critical package for reducing climate risks. Using the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program in Ghana, the study investigates the role of SCT to climate change adaptation in rural Ghana. The study employs a mixed-method study using interview schedule and in-depth interviews to obtain responses from...
