Air pollution may weaken trees and increase the number of insects inhabiting them.Aims To determine the habitat preferences of the Syrian Woodpecker in the highly urbanized environment of the city of Kraków.Methods A set of 13 habitat and environmental parameters of 50 breeding territories and 50 random points were evaluated. A logistic...

AbstractEducating for citizenship is most often associated with a discourse of liberalism in which knowledge, skills and values of equality, rights, justice and national identity are taught. A competing neoliberal discourse with values of self-improvement, responsibility and entrepreneurialism is now quite pervasive in educational policies and practices, shifting goals and processes of education for citizenship. In Tanzania, neoliberalism's influence is evident in the private provision of...

One of the mandates of Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP) in South Africa is to ensure that all schools and health facilities have access to basic infrastructure such as water and electricity by 2014. Our academic researchers have not researched much about how rural schools that do not have infrastructure have been managing to achieve school education outcomes. When wind-storms occur (sometimes accompanied by rains) learners coming from the same rural regions of our country do...

The need to reduce poverty in all its forms remains a priority around the world. The fact that countries with higher incidences of growth have an associated reduction in poverty levels is uncontested both in theory and in empirical findings. The channels through which growth results into poverty reduction are not clear. This study looks at education as a channel through which economic growth and poverty reduction are linked. Using data on districts in Malawi, we estimate a regression with...

Thirty samples of gastropod shells belonging to Nerita albicilla and Canarium (Gibberulus) gibbosus from 15 stations along the Egyptian Red Sea coast were selected for chemical analysis. The analysis indicated that Nerita is a geochemical marker for a sizeable group of trace elements including; Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Th, Ba, Tl, S, Sc and Se, while Canarium is a good accumulator of the elements, Mo, U, Au and K. Both species have the same selectivity for Ni, Mn, Fe, As, Sr and P. The differences in...

Drought poses one of the most important environmental constraints to plant survival and productivity and by implication-food insecurity in the tropics. Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) has the potential of fertilizing the soil thereby improving agricultural production and ensure green environmental and ecosystem stability. Despite the ability of the plant to improve soil fertility and promote greening environment, it has not attracted adequate awareness as a soil improvement plant. This paper...

An understanding of volcanic jets is critical to determining volcanic eruption column dynamics and mitigating volcanic hazards. However, volcanic jets are inherently difficult to observe directly due to their violence, opacity, and complex multi-phase and multi-component flow features. Recent work has shown similarities between the sound produced from explosive volcanic jets and man-made jet engines and rockets. We show that infrasound generated by the 2011 eruption of Nabro Volcano, Eritrea...

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of two closely spaced doses of praziquantel (PZQ) against Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni infection in school-aged children, and to characterise re-infection patterns over a 12-month period. The study was carried out in five villages in western Niger: Falmado, Seberi and Libore (single S. haematobium infection foci), and Diambala and Namarigoungou (mixed S. haematobium-S. mansoni infection foci). Parasitological examinations...
