This article addresses the historical contributions of African students to higher education in the United States from 1925-1959. During this period, African students in the United States actively pursued, what Nnamdi Azikiwe, the great African nationalist and former student himself termed, the “golden fleece.” It represented the promise of American higher education as a panacea to African ills, particularly colonialism. The tendency has been to view African studentship in the United States...

The impact of specific actions designed to streamline and tighten the workflow processes of key actors in Madagascar's primary education sector are evaluated. To inform the strategy for scaling up, a randomized experiment was carried out over two school years. Political scientists have repeatedly demonstrated that several states on the African continent fall into the category of failed, quasi, or weak states. Though these distinctions are useful, for the most part they neglect to acknowledge how and by whom governance functions, such as the provision of public goods, are being carried out in the context of state weakness. Increasingly the provision of such goods has become the work of non-state actors, such as religious, international, and rebel...

Its secondary schools have provided only an academic pathway for the top quarter of its students. Thousands of secondary school students become school leavers at Grade 10 and...

In this chapter I focus on a group of Jewish Ethiopian youth at the Alon boarding school who were offered a theatre project as one of their recreational activities. In this case study my intention is to consider the politics of the boarding school as one of the settings of community-based theatre in Israel, and to investigate the extent to which a specific group of young black immigrants managed to make do with theatre for their own needs in such a location. The chapter opens with an...

Domestic animals and their wild relatives differ in a wide variety of aspects. The process of domestication of the domestic guinea pig (Cavia aperea f. porcellus), starting at least 4500 years ago, led to changes in the anatomy, physiology, and behaviour compared with their wild relative, the wild cavy, Cavia aperea. Although domestic guinea pigs are widely used as a laboratory animal, learning and memory capabilities are often disregarded as being very scarce. Even less is known about...
