In South Africa, there is still no clear policy of internationalisation of higher education, partly due to limited research. So far, only two efforts – at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in 2004 and Rhodes University in 2005 – have been made to determine the expenditure and foreign revenue impact of international students on South Africa. Each of these papers sampled only a single university, so they are of limited use for national impact analysis. To build on these studies,...

Overseeing medical students working in small rural clinics challenges both the students and the lecturers. How does one evaluate a learning experience that does not involve memorising facts? Socrates (470-399 BC) maintained that the teacher's role was not to impart knowledge but rather to expose ignorance and encourage a process of self-discovery. According to Socrates, the outcome of this process was a new understanding of oneself, a sense of emotional balance and an increased...

The thickness of the mantle transition zone beneath Cameroon has been mapped using data from the 2005-2007 Cameroon Broadband Seismic Experiment to evaluate models for the origin of the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL). Some 2200 receiver functions have been stacked using a 3-D velocity model, revealing Ps conversions from the mantle transition zone discontinuities at depths of ~410 and 660 km. Results yield a nearly uniform transition zone thickness (251 ± 10 km) that is similar to the global...

This paper describes key historical and contemporary examples of African Americans and their allies coproducing education for their communities. I argue that such examples, which arise within contexts where the state lacks the will or capacity to meet the educational needs desired by these communities, reveal a vibrant realm of public engagement often overlooked by those who decry the lack of civic engagement. Ultimately, these examples reveal a latent democratic potential in these and...
