Introduction Stones (2005) sees language or communicative competence thus: a speaker needs to know to communicate effectively in culturally significant setting. Language use, for example is what is said on a particular occasion, how it is phrased, and how it is coordinated with nonverbal sign. It cannot simply be a matter of individuals' free choice. It must be affected by subconsciously internalized constraints. Languages play social roles; they are involved in social intercourse, and...

Before the introduction of the Western system of education into Africa (18th century), the aim of indigenous education was to preserve the cultural heritage of the family, the clan, and the larger groups. Indigenous education was meant for every member of the society because it was believed that every member of society had a role to play in educating the child, thus the proverb “It takes a village to raise a child.” This paper addresses the philosophy of self-reliance as advocated by Julius...

Considerable progress has been made to control both stresses through integrated pest management (IPM) components. But, there has been no focus on farmers' needs, knowledge, and capacity for...

Abstract The relationship between parasite species diversity and organic pollution in the upper Manyame catchment, Zimbabwe, was investigated between October 2006 and January 2007. The parasite assemblage comprised 13 species in total. Species richness in the unpolluted sites was high; in the moderately polluted sites, it was low, while in the polluted sites, only one parasite species was encountered. Component community diversity, as measured by the Shannon index ( H ′), decreased with...

Braamhoek wetland is situated at an altitude of c. 1700 meters, a few kilometres north-west of the eastern escarpment, where the large difference in altitude results in orographic uplift of easterly air masses and annual rainfall is c. 1400 mm. The wetland is fed by ground-water springs, promoting continuous local wetness and organic preservation, which explains the accumulative conditions throughout Holocene and late Pleistocene.

The purpose of this study was to critically examine the perceptions that African-American high school students have towards engineering. A qualitative research design using criterion sampling and snowballing was used to select seven African-American students from urban high schools to participate in the research. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from participants attending urban high schools on the east and west coast. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as the theoretical...

African Americans account for about 12.7% of the United States population, but only 1% of the National Society of Genetic Counselors' membership identifies as African American. Since individuals often seek health care from providers sharing similar backgrounds, training genetic counselors from diverse backgrounds is critical. Psychology and biology students (N=552) at four universities completed a self-administered online survey assessing the influence of genetic counseling awareness,...

Globally, distance learning has gained legitimacy as an effective mode for learning and training. This legitimacy has occurred as a result of, inter alia, its flexibility with respect to time, pace and entry requirements, affordability, cost‐effectiveness, and reputation for high quality. In Kenya, distance learning – although relatively new – is being promoted to attain the Millennium Development Goals, Universal Primary Education, and the Kenya Vision 2030 targets. The majority of those...

Abstract In this study, large‐scale atmospheric variables are downscaled to meteorological variables at local scale for the daily time step to assess hydrological impacts by climate changes. Large‐scale atmospheric modelling was by the HadCM3 General Circulation Model (GCM) while downscaling and water balance modelling was through the Statistical DownScaling Model and the HBV semi‐distributed rainfall‐runoff model, respectively. The area of study was the Gilgel Abay catchment that drains in...
