Abstract This study reports on the results of geological and seismological field studies conducted following the rare occurrence of a moderate-sized West African earthquake (mb = 6.4) with associated ground breakage. The epicentral area of the northwestern Guinea earthquake of 22 December 1983 is a coastal margin, intraplate locale with a very low level of historical seismicity. The principal results include the observation that seismic faulting occurred on a preexisting fault system and...

Extrusive submarine volcanism must be influenced by magma–water interaction. In the continental areas, due to groundwater and hydrous fluids, uprising magma frequently interacts with water. The major effect of magma–water interaction is an increase in thermal energy flux and induction of a special type of magma fragmentation, i.e., phreatomagmatic fragmentation. The products of this process are typical and discriminative: angular, blocky particles with diameters between 30 and 130 μm, and...

AbstractDietary intake analysis, over 7 days, of 120 randomly selected Nigerian University students aged 17-26 years, disclosed deviations from internationally accepted standards. The students were in residence at the University, where all meals were provided. Food preferences and habits were determined by questionnaire, and nutrient intake was calculated from weighed meals eaten over a 7-day period. Food intake of 95% of the students did not differ from that at home; 73% missed breakfast....

Radiosonde data for thirteen summer months have been used to relate Richardson under Ri and vertical wind shear to storm occurrences at Kano. It is shown that thunderstorms occur most frequently in association with low-level shears, ΔUL, below the Africal Easterly Jet (surface to 700 mb) within −20⩽ΔUL⩽−5 ms−1 and for the 700-400 layer, ΔUm, in the range 0<ΔUm<10 m s−1. The Richardson number with which storm occurrences are most common is bi-modal in both lower and middle troposphere:...

An audit of the operations performed and the use of anaesthesia over one year at the University Teaching Hospital, two provincial hospitals, and five district or church hospitals in Zambia was carried out. The aim of the audit was to determine what proportion of operations required full surgical training and to collect information on which recommendations for training surgeons in central Africa could be based. Of the 21,245 operations performed, 18,401 (86.4%) were found not to be complex,...

It has long been established that the advantages of distance education include its cost-saving potential and flexibility. “Once the initial capital outlay is made and materials produced, unit costs decrease with expansion†(Fay Chung, 1992). One of the most serious obstacles to distance education for many years has been the perception on the part of traditional educators and the general public who view distance education as second rate. However, given the modern trends in distance...
