An examination of diagnosis of handicapped children in a large urban rehabilitation centre was undertaken. The breakdown showed wide age-ranges and lengthy stays in the centre. Detailed screening of the problems consequent on handicap was also undertaken, and revealed great differences in the needs of different diagnostic groups. Discussion of the prevalence rates of various categories of disorder follows, with comparison with expected rates and previous studies.

The effects of gender and degree of modernization upon WRAT Spelling, Arithmetic, and Reading scores of 72 class-six Sierra Leone, West African children, representing four sub-cultures with varying degrees of modernization, were investigated. Seismograms of aftershocks of the El Asnam earthquake recorded by three‐component stations of a local array provide direct evidence of structural heterogeneity in the aftershock zone. Inversion of arrival times for three dimensional velocity structure is thus needed for the relocation of hypocenters. These fall within a reduced depth interval from 6 to 12 km in the underthrust block.

A simple weighing method using carbon tetrachloride as solvent was used to survey the dissolved hydrocarbon and tarball levels in the area of the Egyptian Red Sea coast. Between 1977 and 1981, 3089 patients attended the sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic in Zaria, northern Nigeria.The male-to-female ratio of attenders was 6:1.Postpubertal gonorrhoea accounted for 28-1lo of cases, non-specific genital infections for 22 4%, and syphilis for 1 20o.Illiteracy, polygamy, the purdah system, widespread prostitution, and inadequate facilities are factors aiding the spread of these diseases in northern Nigeria.

In conclusion, it should be emphasized that this man probably would have been considered more mentally ill than someone suffering solely from the effects of being accursed and that he would have been a psychiatric casualty even in familiar surroundings.
