Data on age at menarche for 348 schoolgirls in Benin City Nigeria are analyzed. It is shown that mean menarcheal age is 12.3 years for those from higher-income groups and 13 years for those from low-income groups. (ANNOTATION)

Past damaging earthquakes in southern Ghana have been studied by means of available intensity and instrumental data. The results indicate that intensity attenuation in southern Ghana is generally low. The trend of the isoseismals seem to be related to the geology of the area. Results of the relocation of the earthquakes suggest that those located solely by teleseismically recorded arrival times may be in error by several tens of kilometres. Four cases of fluctuating hearing loss in West African and West Indian racial groups are presented. Two are Menière's disease, and the authors are unaware of any report in English publications describing Menière's disease in these racial groups. One is late syphilitic hearing loss and the other is idiopathic. The possible role of yaws is presented and long-held beliefs questioned.

Strontium isotope data are presented from 28 rock samples representing four distinct episodes of late Cenozoic volcanism in southeastern Papua. Eocene tholeiitic basalts have initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7037) which are higher than those in chemically comparable basalts and are thought to have been enhanced by rock-sea water interaction.
