The public health and economic consequences of Plasmodium falciparum malaria are once again regarded as priorities for global development. There has been much speculation on whether anthropogenic climate change is exacerbating the malaria problem, especially in areas of high altitude where P. falciparum transmission is limited by low temperature. The International Panel on Climate Change has concluded that there is likely to be a net extension in the distribution of malaria and an increase...

This study examines the effectiveness of breast cancer screening education programs on mammography rates among African-American women 40 years of age and over. We conducted two types of educational programs in community settings, primarily in African-American churches. Three-month follow-up interviews were used to determine whether women who participated in programming were more likely to get a mammogram if they had not had a mammogram in the last year. Our results demonstrate that the...

The objective of the present study was to further characterize cochlear recovery after cisplatin damage. We equipped albino guinea pigs with permanent round window electrodes. Cisplatin was injected i.p. on a daily basis at either 1.5 or 2.0 mg/kg/day. Treatment was stopped when the criterion of > or =40 dB loss in the compound action potential iso-response level at 8 kHz had occurred. Either shortly (1-3 days) or long (4 weeks or more) after this stop, the endocochlear potential (EP) was...

Although globalisation and internationalisation of higher education in Africa have borne many benefits, some problems that face the South African public higher education today may be associated with them. We report here novel field spectroscopic measurements of the proportions of H2O, CO2, CO and SO2 in gas emissions from Oldoinyo Lengai, the world's unique, active carbonatite volcano. We found that CO2 constitutes <40 mol% of emissions from a lava lake, and 25 mol% from a cooler fumarole vent. These results suggest that H2O is the predominant gas phase rather than CO2, as reported in previous studies based on conventional sampling (Trans. Am. Geophys. Union 69 (1998) 1466; J. Geophys. Res....
