A total of 358 experimental-group children in 10 schools, ranging in grade levels from 2 to 5, participated in the study. An additional 100 students of the same ages served as control participants. The rapid proliferation of private provision in South African education has attracted considerable policy attention. Thought to be linked to the decline in public enrolment, this rapid expansion was perceived as a direct threat to the public sector. However, very little is known about the nature of the private sector, the distribution of its enrolment and its programmatic focus. This article draws from previous research to provide an overview of the quantitative data for a sub-set of 60...

Evidence abounds in the literature of a direct link between pre-primary education and academic performance in the primary school. The salutary effect of the ‘Head start’ programme inaugurated in the United States of America in the early 1960s on the academic performances of its beneficiaries in the lower primary is such a piece of evidence. Premised on this commonality between pre-primary education and academic achievement in the primary school, the study aimed at finding out whether there...

This study assessed the role of the family on academic performance among African American and Caucasian college students. Family functioning, family status, and demographic variables were examined in a questionnaire. Results suggested that although the family continues to be important at the college level, the effect is small. Future research should examine the impact of the family in the context of peer and institutional variables for African Americans and Caucasians separately. **********...

The Rehabilitation of Basic Education Project will have national coverage, however, this environmental assessment (EA) was conducted in three districts (Kailahun, Kono, and Kambia) together with the Western Area, because those three districts were severely affected by the civil conflict; conversely, the Western Area, clearly contrasts in terms of physical damage to educational infrastructures, environmental degradation, and institutional arrangements for impact management. Burden of disease (BOD) estimates used to foster local health policy require disability weights which represent local preferences for different health states. The global burden of disease (GBD) study presumes that disability weights are universal and equal across countries and cultures, but this is questionable. This indicates the need to measure local disability weights across nations and/or cultures. We developed a culturally adapted version of the visual analogue scale (VAS) for a setting...

Differential investment in children and resulting differences in activity budgets may have significant effects on children's growth and development as well as on aspects of reproduction. This study uses predictions regarding parental investment in the embodied capital...
