The Neoproterozoic Wadi Rufaiyil volcano-sedimentary successions are exposed in southern Sinai (Egypt), at the northernmost segment of the Arabian–Nubian Shield (ANS). Two eruption phases have been recognized within these successions; both of them are intercalated with the Hammamat Clastics. The lower unit is composed predominantly of andesite to dacite and less commonly tuffs, while the upper one comprised mainly rhyolite with subordinate dacite–rhyodacite and their pyroclastics. The lower...

Background/Context Although the dominant narrative of the civil rights movement marginalizes the role of black educators, revisionist scholars have shown that a significant number of black teachers encouraged student protest and activism. There has, however, been little analysis of the work of black teachers inside segregated schools in the South. Purpose/Objective This study examines the courses that Southern African American teachers taught, the pedagogies they practiced, and the...

This article describes how during ethnographic research in Sierra Leone, I was working with people who were used to telling stories of violence about how they got their impairments, which I perceived as ethically problematic and exploitative. I explain how those stories are becoming linked to a post-conflict culture of dependency, patronage and payment. In this context, I explain some of the ethical limitations and struggles I encountered and why, in order to align my research to the...

A large empirical literature has shown that user fees significantly deter public service utilization in developing countries. While most of these results reflect partial equilibrium analysis, we find that the nationwide abolition of public school fees in Kenya in 2003 led to no increase in net public enrollment rates, but rather a dramatic shift toward private schooling. Results suggest this divergence between partial- and general-equilibrium effects is partially explained by social...

In the past, persons with disabilities and the relationship between disability and sports were excluded from discussions of development. Within the past 15 years, however, there has been a proliferation of ‘development through sport’ initiatives and a widespread promotion of the intended and unintended outcomes of participation in sport for persons living in low- and middle-income countries. From the vantage point of development studies, and drawing on qualitative research methods, this...

This paper provides a model-based assessment of local and global climate change impacts for the case of Yemen, focusing on agricultural production, household incomes and food security. Global climate change is mainly transmitted through rising world food prices. Our simulation results suggest that climate change induced price increases for food will raise agricultural GDP while decreasing real household incomes and food security. Rural nonfarm households are hit hardest as they tend to be...
