Abstract Drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s “lived body” theory, we argue for a shift towards a lived-experience and body-specific curriculum in South Africa. Such a curriculum would view learning as a lived, embodied, social and culturally contextualised field. Its central aim would be to draw the learner into a plane of consciousness conducive to being awakened to the act of learning through an attitude of full attention. We specifically use the term “body-specific” to imply, as opposed to a...

Soil transmitted helminths (STHs) are among the world's neglected tropical diseases. Morbidity due to STHs is greatest in school-age children who typically have the highest burden of infection. In 2001, WHO passed a resolution for the use of large-scale mass drug administration (MDA) to deworm vulnerable children through school based programs. Though effective, there is concern that MDA might not be sustainable over extended periods. Additionally the current MDA strategy does not consider...

Random Forests, a supervised machine learning algorithm, provides a robust, data driven means of predicting lithology from geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing data. As an essential part of input selection, datasets are ranked in order of importance to the classification outcome. Those ranked most important provide, on average, the most decisive split between lithological classes. These rankings provide explorers with an additional line of reasoning to complement conventional,...

In a review of Coetzee's White Writing (1988) and Gordimer's Essential Gesture (1988), Lewis Nkosi (1989) highlights fundamental deficits in South African literature.Owing to inadequate resources and statutory racial divides instituted by apartheid -Nkosi (1989) responds to these deficits through what I interpret as a series of provocations, that posit an African Vocabulary.Using a narrative approach I suggest a rudimentary articulation of an African Vocabulary.I explore the negotiation of...

Feedback that monitors and scaffolds student learning has been shown to support learning. This study investigates the effect of mathematics teachers’ perceptions of Formative Assessment (FA) and Assessment for Learning (AfL) and their conceptions of assessment on the quality of their feedback practices. The study was conducted in 48 secondary schools in Tanzania with 54 experienced mathematics teachers teaching Grade 11 (Form three in the Tanzanian system). Validated questionnaires were...

Multi-proxy analyses of an 8 m sediment core from Lake Hayk, a closed, freshwater lake in the north-central highlands of Ethiopia, provide a record of changing lake level and inferred regional climatic change for the last 15.6 cal ka years. Between ca. 15.6–15.2 cal ka BP, a lowstand was synchronous with Heinrich Event 1 and an intense drought across Eastern Africa. At ca. 15.2 cal ka BP a lake began to develop at the core site in response to wetter conditions, at the onset of the African...
